I attached a winter wheel/tire combination from tirerack.com - what is everyone's opinion of this (performance, safety, compatibility, different tire pressure sensors, etc)? I would be purchasing them at a much lower price than what's listed on that site.

Thanks.
A coupe of thoughts for you on why I decided to pony up for the BMW set... I paid $3800 plus tax from my dealer.

1) The F85 has a wheel fitment (size, bore, offset, etc.) that is hard to find via aftermarket suppliers. The limited options I saw were still well north of $2k and, in my opinion, did not look as good as the OEM setup.
2) Beyond not looking as good, I only have so many hours in the day and I'd rather spend a little more and know that the fitment will be perfect.
3) If you have wheel & tire insurance through BMW (or a third party but sold by your dealer), it should cover a winter setup that is on the car IF it is a BMW wheel... most will not cover an aftermarket wheel.
4) And, lastly, the BMW winter setups tend to hold their value well. I have usually sold mine after 3-4 years for 50% or more of the original purchase price. Aftermarket wheels won't hold their value as well.

So, my conclusion was that the BMW option, although expensive, was worth it. Just my $0.02...
Agree completely with Indy. I've never had an issue with selling OEM BMW wheels for reasonable cost.

The part numbers I just posted are the correct current numbers for this option per BMW's most recent dealer bulletin regarding their official winter tire sets.
Ive had this thread saved with a reminder to buy winter tires before the rush starts. Thanks for clearing up the part #s Urban, just ordered these today for pick up next week when I get my 1200 mile done (as well as my brakes and bearings).

Can't have the wife driving around on summer slicks.

Ok so my BMW dealer is now trying to convince me to just put the Pirelli Scorpion Winter XL tires on my OEM 20" 2016 F85 X5M wheels. I'm skeptical because the rear wheels are wider, yet the winter tires are the same size all around. The parts dept guy assured me they will still fit and perform perfectly fine.... Any thoughts on this? I would keep the wheels as clean as possible during the winter to avoid damage from road salt, and it's a lease.

They're the same size? So 285? That's nonsense. At least for the OE rear rim.

The quote they sent me shows quantity 4 of part number 36-11-2-406-700 and has a truncated description of "PIRELLI SC". When I called to ask for more information, the parts dept guy told me that these are Pirelli Scorpion XL winter tires, and that this is the "BMW recommended" winter tire configuration. He went on to acknowledge and describe the width of my existing OEM rear wheels, and explained the supposed allowed variance in tire width.

My 2016 X85 X5M currently runs the 20" OEM wheels with Pirelli P-Zero summer performance tires, as follows:

Front tires: 285/40R20 104Y
Rear tires: 325/35R20 108Y

From what I see on tirerack, the spec of the Scorpion Winter XL 20" tires is 275/40R20 106V all around. These are the tires which the BMW dealship told me to use as a winter-time replacement for the above mentioned summer tires.

Based on Tire Rack sizing if the 275 works, the 285 would as well. Nothing wrong with going with a squared setup on winters, it would give you the ability to rotate to the front to save tread depth every other season.

I run 275 all around but I have dedicated rears for winter. I had to get a set of front rims to run in the rear last year when no one had a winter package. I'm running 275s on 285 rims. I can't imagine running 275s on 325 rims. That's what - 2 inches difference. Do they have 315s for the rear? That's only a few 10ths of an inch. That isn't as much of a stretch.

This.

I cannot imagine running 275 on he OE 20" rear.

If you have the OE winter set, which is square, then 275 would be fine. Perhaps TireRack is confusing the two.

Tire rack has the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow run flats 275/40R20 106V XL and 315/35R20 110V XL. I think that would be your best bet to fit your staggered current OEM wheels.

They only show summer tires in the 285/40R20 and 325/35R20.

Just locked in my winter tire package for my 2017 X5M. Went with 20" OEM BMW wheels style 611. All up cost (wheels, tires, toms, mounted and balanced) is $3685 + tax. Staggered setup.

Package will arrive at dealer in 1 week. Parts guy said this was the only package available this year from BMW directly for the X5M.

I went through last winter's craziness here on Cape Cod with the BMW winter set for the X5 M, and I was impressed. I wasn't ever stuck, slid, or skidded into anything, even when the weather was at its worst. They don't handle as well as the summer, set, but they aren't intended to. I, also, like the dark orbit grey finish they come in. They're not the best priced set, but they are also covered under BMW's wheel and tire insurance, which I had to use for a winter tire set in December, for a screw and nail in my tires. There wasn't a hitch, they replaced the tires without question.

Isn't the 20" OEM BMW style 611 a square setup, not staggered? Did they change it for 2017?

Correct, it is still square for 2017. Only the offset is different for front and rear.

FWIW, I ordered a set yesterday from my dealer and was told that they are not black. Orbit grey background w/ machined faces. Really wanted them in black.

I ordered:

36-11-2-365-424
36-11-2-365-425

Any ideas?
