Winter wheel/tire options for F85 X5M and F86 X6M?

Had my winters installed, the BMW set. There is a noticeable difference in sporty driving. Perhaps I push my vehicles harder than most, but a corner I normally take at 60 MPH, can now only be had at around 50 MPH if I'm lucky. One can feel the car pull into the larger soft sidewall. It is a disconcerting feeling at speed. The rims, being dark grey, look amazing on the vehicle, and the tires are quiet, but I miss the handling of the 21" summer set.

Hello from Canada,

Just got my wife a 2016 X5M, realized this damn thing doesn't come with good choice of winter tires with the stock wheels. my dealer had suggested 275/40/20 + 315/35/20, did some research, looks like Continental DWS seems like a all year round winner. I guess I will have to order some wheels for the summer time.

Are those Performance Winters? I know there are some diff categories with Winters.

Yes, performance winters. Pirelli Scorpion Winter. They drive similar to the Scorpion Ice and Snow I had on my previous X5, but quieter. The unsprung weight is noticeably lighter with these on the vehicle. I think these could make the X5 M very fun in the middle of a snow storm ;-)

that sucks even more if they're performance winters... You're on the 285s, 10/10.5" staggered then? And the scorpion winters came from the dealer?

Yes, the official BMW set comes with the scorpion winters on the rims.

Thanks again for the information. I'm ordering a set like yours. Did you get the TPMS from them or on your own (just wondering if they are factory TPMS or 'generic').

As for riding on the 21" PSS in winter...well *I* wouldn't even take it out of the driveway with those shoes in cold weather, (near or below freezing) snow, ice, or not...it's just not worth the risk to the ride, or me, or anyone else i may slide into. summer tires get really hard at these temps.

well finally had some snow today, about 6". *LOVE* the DWS06 in the snow. Very grippy…makes me even happier with this purchase.

I'm running Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow RFT in OEM size (285/35/21 & 325/30/21) on my OEM 21'' rims for 3 weeks now - looks good - feels good (naturally a little stiffer then non run flat...) - nothing to complain about

I was in the same boat, didnt like the spec'd rubber. They do sell just the rims provided they're not having supply problems at the moment. Completely insane though. In Canada, I was quoted 5500 or so for the package and just under 5000 for rims alone. I laughed and went aftermarket.

I had a play in the deep-ish (about 16") snow we had in Washington this weekend.

Car was rock solid - really impressive grip and general traction from the OEM winter setup.

Clearance isn't so great on the X6M, but that's really all that'd stop it

I never drive, live, near winter states with snow, but with the pic above, don't you worry the paint gets scratched by the ice? I would just drive a Subaru in snow like this.

I can't speak for Alistairg, but I covered any of the lower areas that would come in contact with snow or ice with XPel Ultimate. The only concern I have about plowing through snow with my X5 M is how much fun will I have doing it! Obvuously, if the snow has frozen into a solid chunk, I'm not going to ram into it, and I don't expect others on here would, either.

Looks like fresh snow. Soft and fluffy!

xDrive, torque vectoring diffs and snow tires?! This thing would leave a subie in the dust (err. snow)!

I wish I had done like you, AwesomeM3! I put my winters on during the cold snap on Cape Cod right before Thanksgiving, and have been cursing the decision since. Temps are back near 60 here again today.

Today being the first official day of winter, I think us northeasterners are getting close to finally putting the winters on. Ive been swapping to winters on all cars for many years. This is by far the latest in the season I have ever gone without switching over.
