X5M ceramic controls?

I don't see ceramic controls listed in the options. Anyone know if they can be added?

Finally! Someone asks the 119k dollar question!!! 119k X6M and no ceramic?!!!!!!!! I'm sure you can purchase the ceramic for everything else like in my current F15 50i, but not for the gear shift... Never seen it in ceramic!

They're probably too heavy, and would adversely affect performance.

Unfortunately they're not available and haven't been in an M car.

I forgot to add something. 2 or so years ago when I did ED on my F10 M5 I had the chance to visit M GmbH. I asked this very question.

The response was a bit odd but not entirely unexpected.

First, they said that the ceramic controls were a bit slippery and wouldn't make the ideal material for the gear selector, especially if you're on the track and not wearing gloves.

Second, the designers want harmony in the cabin and wouldn't put in a shifter that didn't match the other control surfaces.

I suggested alcantara to them, and they sort of smiled. That was that.

So I guess we will never know the real reason, but it would be beautiful to have as an option.

It's not as easy as you think.

I asked this exact question in anticipation of my M50d being traded (with ceramic idrive controller) for my new X5M with silver controller.

He's going to find out but I figured if I get them to install the M Performance Carbon centre console piece, they will have it all out.

Looking at IND's DIY thread on the centre console trim, it looks like it essentially screws out and has a plug to be separated.

No idea if there could be compatibility issues however.

The ceramic controls are actually slippery. There is a definite difference in feel and it is more difficult to get a grip on them. I have them in my wife's F15 50i and have had them in two other F10 550i's. My F85 obviously does not and I for one prefer not having them. I actually am of the opinion that they are one of the worst "upgrade" options available from BMW in any model - in NA, they come with the Executive Package. Another note, the iDrive controller dial does not illuminate on the ceramic version, another downside.

The part numbers are different and report back to BMW's diagnostic tools. While it would in theory work, workshop systems would reject them and suggest the tech replace them.

I have a thought here - when I fitted LED headlights to my X6, the option code had to be added to the Vehicle Order and the Autologic diagnostic system was able to do this successfully without any interaction at BMW NA.

When the option was fitted, we called Autlogic, gave them the VIN, and they sent us the proper programming file to download to the tool, and then it was coded/programmed to the appropriate modules.

Just a thought if anyone wants to explore further, it may or may not work.
