urs looks to be purely cosmetic damage where as his looks to involve suspension damage as well

OP: what makes u think its ok to drive on summer tires in the snow... especially, as per ur description, on a large steep hill? AWD does not save stupidity... smfh

OP already knows that, since he/she posted this in the first place and stated/admitted what you are trying to hammer home.

did you read the OP's post? 2 months after the accident and he still thinks he has all season tires.

Lets cut the OP some slack. It's pretty apparent that the OP "thought" he was running all seasons when he is actually using summer tires. Most of the time people who buy Msport BMW's with 20" wheels have no idea that they come installed with Summers.

I am only guessing but going to wager the rad supports and and the right side engine bay has to be rebuilt along with whatever was damaged underneath to the suspension, running gear and all associated electronics but considering the extent of the damage I would have worked with the shop to push for a total loss because you're going to get crushed on the resale/trade value.

That's what I never understood and had no time to really learn all insurance options: isn't there a way to get compensated for that resale loss? I myself got into accidents twice, both times 100% not at fault, insurance paid for repairs 100% and all was good, but we always got hit when selling vehicle down the road later: buyers saw reported accident and we had to drop price every time

Many years ago, I had a 335 with sport package. Embarrassingly, I did not know the car had summer tires.

One morning it started to snow and most of us left the office to head home. I barely made it out of the parking garage before I slid across the pavement with just a trace of snow.

I stopped, turned it off, and waited for the snow to clear. I then purchased a set of snow tires for the winter and life was good.

Sorry to hear you learned the hard way. We've all made mistakes.

It happened to me in 2000. Rochester, NY: a known snow belt area.
Lexus IS 300 RWD w/performance tires.
Salesperson warned me to buy snow tires. I didn't.
First burst of snow, was skiing like crazy...barely made it home crawling.
Never put snow tires, but never took it out to snow either!

depends on the state you live in and the insurance company.
diminished value claim is what you want to look for in your policy or the person who hit you.

BMW Group products have astronomical repair costs. A few years ago we nipped the rear tail of our Phantom Coupe backing out of our garage (we hit the bumper of our Ford Raptor truck :-O Big oops!!!
The damage consisted of a broken taillamp and a dent the size of an index fingernail. Damage....$40,000 and 3 months of repair at the RR dealer!!!

I also find those numbers to be extremely inflated.

Just like healthcare everything is inflated or buffer added to the actual cost to cover any possible losses and then some.

OP, sorry to hear of the "incident". I too have made mistakes in judgment in the past and have actually been the at-fault party in an accident before. It's possible that I could find myself in that position in the future. I can only hope that those around me at the time will be a little more kind and graceful than a couple of the responses you received here. Kudo's to you for thinking on your feet and letting the pole take the hit rather than the unsuspecting drivers ahead of you.

Not sure what's your point?!

A new Rolls Royce costs at least 3 times more than a BMW, and I bet repairing a similar damage on the X5 costs about 10 times less.
So you refer to BMW Group as being very expensive to repair, but your arguments actually prove otherwise...

It's like complaining about the repair costs of VAG Group that produces Skoda's because repairing a Bugatti costs a fortune.

I think he just wanted to let us know he's a baller with the Raptor and Phantom

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes lessons learned for sure, bad decision on my part to upgrade cosmetics before taking winter wheels into consideration. I had a QX60 prior to this vehicle with 20" all seasons and it drove fine up and down the hell hill. Then again those tires were more narrow then these ones are. I also paid nothing out of pocket and insurance did not go up as the cop wrote it up as being "weather conditions". I was not the only person who got in an accident on that same hill and USAA called it an act of god (they are awesome by the way).

I saw the invoice and it was 19K in parts alone. He went overkill replacing stuff which is fine by me, he said he wanted to do it right the first time. Headlight with all the sensors was just north of 5K alone! The rest was in labor. Since I have the 3 stage white paint he re-painted the entire vehicle minus the rear. It looks brand new, the guy does Bentley's and other high end vehicles often so I trusted his process. It sucked driving a Volvo for 60+ days but at least I got an M bumper out of it.
