that's very strange...as I'm seeing folks in this forum from the States (also in California) who have placed orders...I also negotiated my order...so try a few more dealers...every dealer wants to sell!!!

Nice. I just placed an order today with the expected delivery date of Dec 27. It was an allocation that the dealer already had, and he says I can still change up my options.

Has anyone had experiences with a lighter colour interior for the Dakota leather? I like the light color but I'm afraid of the maintenance of it.

You ordered a Diesel and the dealer gave you a delivery date of DEC 27th??!!!
I thought the manufacturing of Diesel doesn't even start till Jan/Feb?!

By the way, i have a beige dakota in my 328. Very nice and classy. A bit harder to maintain compared to darker color obviously...but I think it is always a change to have lighter color. My X5 will be a Mocha though...it will be my wife mostly driving it and the kids ruining it...so no light color is advised... lol

Yea the X5 is for my wife and kids. I'll probably stick to the mocha.

The dealer showed me they have a car coming, maybe that's why my date is so early. But I'm totally ok if it comes in Jan/Feb.

I'm working directly with the general manager of the dealership I will order my 35d through. I have purchased cars from him in the past and he has always been above board. As of now, I am told, there are no allocations for the 35d in the US. The dealer might take your deposit and order but I would be suspicious if they actually have an allocation.

it could be possible that tdot-Ducati, because he is ordering a 35d for Canada, will actually be able to get one on the original schedule of December while those of us who want the 35d in the US must wait while the diesel gets emissions clearance here.

That might be it. I'll definitely post my initial experience with the car when I get it.

It's my wife's car but I'm pretty excited!!

I have ordered mine in Canada and as far as schedule goes...I haven't received anything as to the expected delivery date...
if US is lagging the emissions clearance, are you saying that Canada already has that clearance sorted out?

Yes. The US rules (driven by those of California) are way more restrictive than those in Europe and most other countries. That's why many makes offer multiple variants of a Diesel engine outside the US but only one or in many cases, as with Land Rover, none in the US. And it's why the diesels that have been allowed in the US pretty much all have had to resort to using that blue urea filtering system.

What I am hearing is that BMW is feeding the Europe supply pipeline right now with Diesels as 95% of X5s going to Europe are Diesel. The US/ Canada market is the opposite....hence the demand mix. My dealer in Chicago (has huge X5 allocation) told me diesels won't be built for the US market until Feb earliest....however they could be seeding some dealerships with demos.

I could be totally wrong, but I now feel even more strongly than before that the delay with the diesel in the US is due to issues getting it to meet the CARB and EPA emissions standards.

If you search the EPA's data base, you find that BMW asked for approval on the emissions of the gasoline powered 2014 X5 35i back in February of 2013 and received approval from the EPA on 3/7/13.

However, the EPA's web site is not yet showing any indication that BMW has even submitted the 2014 X5's diesel for federal approval (even if the revisions are modest, they still need to be CARB and EPA approved). Moreover, the EPA's approval for the 2013 version of the X5 diesel (which was applied for on 8/27/12 and approved on 11/8/12 ) expires on 12/31/13.

Government approvals on diesel

Good sleuthing on the government websites. It would be in BMW's interest to recognize that these public websites are available to everyone and there is no point in them keeping dealer's and the dealer's customers in the dark about decisions they have made about when to seek approval to sell in the USA. At least once they submit to EPA and California they can blame them if the process takes too long.

I just spoke to my CA and he said the diesel X5 will cost me $20 more per month. I'm thinking if I should go with the diesel.

Lease probably
1500 difference in MSRP between 35i and 35d translates to roughly $20

So you are obviously not taking into account your fuel costs? because that will be way more than $20/month difference (even worse if you are doing high mileage)

and maybe that's just me, but if I were to decide between Diesel and Gasoline, and wanted to go for Gasoline, I would at least go with the 50i because it gives me a stronger engine...
with the incredible torque that you get from 35d, 35i doesn't really cut it for me...plus the fact that you are spending much more on fuel...(don't forget, you need to compare Premium 91 gasoline vs. diesel and not the regular price of gasoline)
