45 mpg.. ? Really?

Having owned a new X5 for just over a month, I'm struggling to get close to the published figure of 45 mpg. I'm currently at 31 mpg.

I've tried driving extremely economically but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Anyone else getting better economy than me?

Official MPG are a joke and a way for car companies to get customers to not pay too much tax. My audi q5 had a rating of 6.5 l/100km and typical rading was 8,6 over a long period. Now my X5 has an official rating of 6.7, but I am gettin 9.9 overall.

I own a X5 F15 30d. I just came back from a road trip to France. We drove about 3500km and the average consumption was 9.5l/100km when we came back (average speed 96 km/h for the whole trip). On the motorway I locked the cruise control to 160 km/h, and that speed isn't what I would call economical. The car wanted around 12l/100km in that speed.

9.5l/100 km = 30 MPG (UK)
12l/100 km = 24 MPG (UK)

I seem to be one of the few who is pleasantly surprised by the fuel consumption.
I've done almost 4'000 km and average is 8.3. On a run at average over 100km/hr I got 7.5l/100km and thats in a M50d. My old E70 3.0d averaged 10.5 and never below 9 even on an easy run. I even took a photo as I was so surprised.

The only thought is my dealer told me the quality of diesel makes a huge difference and he advised to stick to premium brands.

Hi. What model/tyres do you have and what's your 'normal' driving routine?

My 3D has only just done 2k miles since May and I now get 36MPG on a mix of short cross country runs and motorways.
Not even run in yet but superior to my previous 3D which was 32MPG.

I also have the 20" tyre/wheels which I guess reduce the rolling resistance and so impact MPG.

The published mpg on the X5D is 24 city and 31 hwy. Where are you coming up with 45mpg? That's very unrealistic in a 5000 lb SUV.

BMW.CO.UK site configurator states:

BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport Automatic

Diesel 190 kW [262 hp]

Benefit in kind 27% [1]

47.1 - 47.9 mpg [1]

CO₂ emission 156.0 - 158.0 g/km [1]

£ 52,945.00

So 45 MPG would not seem unreasonable although in my experience unobtainable!

NB these are of course Imperial MPG.

I got these results with the car 8 days old. AC was on the whole time, four passengers, four suitcases and beach gear, 45 minutes of stop and go traffic.

I had the car in Eco Pro mode, with the start/stop disabled. I tried to drive to maximize MPG, and was on cruise at 70mph for about an hour.

It exceeded my expectations, and the US EPA estimate. That said, the EU disclosures on my MPG / L/100 are way to aggressive. I can see achieving those in these conditions: tank 1/4 full, already at 50-55mph / 80km, flat, no wind, no AC, one passenger, no electronics, all lights off. The EU disclosed is the maximum attainable.

If you look at his info, he lives in the UK. Their gallon is larger than the US Gallon and they have a different system to arrive at the fuel economy than the EPA of the USA.

Imperial would account for 20% of the difference, which would bring adjusted MPG to 37 MPG, EPA equivalent. There rest as, as you accurately point out, is methodology, which is far more aggressive, and not realistic in my view. They should be calling it maximum in the UK.

Did a basic converter with starting input as US MPG. Feel free to download and change. Now set to 31 mpg.

I've done 5k miles in my 40D and have done trips of 100 miles with well over 40mpg returned, imperial gallons though. It all depends on how hard you drive it I find.

I drive it quite hard so generally have a lower mpg around the low 30's but if I want to drive economically I can easily get over 40mpg.

In my previous car, an RX450h, I rarely got over 30mpg but if someone else drove it they would regularly get nearly 40mpg on a decent length trip, all down to driving style in my experience.

The biggest cause I can see is that I usually cruise on the motorway at about 85mph, traffic and conditions allowing, just dropping this to 70/75mph makes quite a difference to the mpg & range as well as not nailing it away from the lights, just because I can
