Question for the diesel owners--fuel
My local Shell sells diesel which is labelled as 15 PPM ultra low sulfur. Is this ok to use with the X5 diesel? Not sure if such a low sulfur content is ok. Also, Shell doesnt post how much bio is in the fuel. Anybody know? I asked the attendant and he had no idea what I was talking about. By the way, anyone use B20 diesel? I know the manual says no more than B5, but I wonder if anyone has tried B20. Thanks.

Part 1 - Yes the sulphur level meets the car's requirements. 15ppm is the EPA standard for all but specialty diesels used for non-road engine (ski lifts, trains, mining equipment, etc.) Part 2- Each State has rules on bio content. You should check state info. Part 3- Have not tried higher than B5, and would advise against, unless I was out of fuel and had to do so temporary. Bio lacks sufficient lubrication and can be damaging to seals, gaskets, etc. I am sure it would run just fine on that that refill if you ignore the long-term risks; it will also lose power a just a tad. |

MattBianco is correct from what I've seen.
My understanding is that only ultra-low sulfur diesel can be sold at the pumps we typically use. if there's biodiesel in that pump then it's usually labeled as B5, B10, etc. BMW says no more than B5 so if you have a choice, avoid it. I don't think there will be an issue with short term use though...the longevity of it though is in question. As you know, Diesel isn't available at all stations however GasBuddy helps when in an unfamiliar area to find stations that carry it. |
