Advertising and appearance charges

I had negotiated a $1000 over invoice price with my dealer but as it came time to write the check, I saw a $530 fee for advertising as part of the invoice cost - something they claim is charged by BMW NA and a $200 appearance package - to clean the car before delivery. Have you seen such charges elsewhere?

No, that is something the dealer is supposed to pay from their earnings. Idk how come you are paying over invoice. I usually get them lower for like 1000bucks. If they have the vehicle on the lot, go to truecar.com and get a quote.

Think I know the dealer. I see them itemize it as MACO at $350 and sales/training at $180. The appearance package includes a full tank of fuel and winter mats, but that is stuff other dealers toss in. I guess my guidance to you is get an "out the door" price from competing dealers if you are cross shopping so there aren't unanticipated charges when taking about a $ figure relative to invoice. If you are trading, that will probably be more of the deciding factor due to greater pricing variance there. That same dealer dominated the competition on that front, made these other fees acceptable to me.

The only charges I had on my invoice are MACO and dealer documentary fees.

MACO is usually around 300 - 350 (Depends on the state)

Dealer fee varies. Mine is around $200. I guess you can bargain on this and the amount can be changed as it is internal to the dealer.

MACO stands for Market Area Co-op Advertising Fee. It is an advertising fee that should be included in the invoice provided by the dealer.

Thats right. If you have received breakdown on the price that you were quoted, this should be listed.

In my experience, dealers will try to add MACO if you are negotiating up from invoice, but not separately add it in if you are negotiating down from MSRP. That being said, I believe the MACO charges are included in the bottom line price if you look at the actual invoice.
