Replacement bumper
So despite having more sensors and cameras than you can count, my parking garage managed to back my 5 month old X5 into a column at something in excess of 15mph. It's pretty beat up.
I just heard from the repair shop that the bumper is on back order and needs to be shipped from Germany. I was kind of surprised given the car is manufactured in South Carolina. I wouldn't have been so surprised if it was a mechanical or an interior piece that is shared with other models, but a bumper seems like something that would be made locally. Does anyone know if that's a part that really does need to come from Germany? |

It's not surprising. Some parts, for different reasons, are manufactured in different parts for the world. Just because it is a large part it doesn't necessarily means it it is produced locally.
Would it be terrible if I ask for pictures of the damage? |

Yeah, they'll wind up paying for it. I'll likely run it through my insurance though.
The garage immediately offered to have it repaired at their shop, but I refused. They repaired damage they did to my last bimmer and did a horrible job. Paint was flaking off the repair by the time I turned it in. Their goal is to get out of it as cheaply as possible, whereas I just want it fixed right. Better to let the insurance company pursue them and know that the repair was done right rather than spend the next 3 years worrying about it. |

Wow, I guess there is more internal damages than what it seems.

Normally innocent looking but always deceptive in cost.
90% is sourced from US, but that in turn maybe outsourced outside US. "Bumpers arrive hourly"....odd why it cannot be pulled from the daily truck shipments, perhaps the bumper has other components/assembles attached. A friend needed a door, was sourced from Germany. http://www.automotivelogisticsmagazi...nly-in-america |

You have to love the parts cost scheme these places run. There is no possible way that accident is equal to about 1/6 to 1/7 of the value of the whole vehicle! It's just absurd.
Not like you are paying, of course, but .. we all pay with insurance rates in the end. |

My completely uninformed guess was that it would be around $8k. I was a little low, but reading the estimate, there's a lot of stuff to fix.
Parts and paint are approx $6k. The rest is labor. In addition to what you can see, there is a small amount of frame work required and they have to do some work to the trunk floor also. The part I didn't really think about, but am happy they're doing, is essentially painting from the start of the rear doors back to properly blend the paint. |

This is some serious damage. I've had a similar incident with the Cayenne.
Since the left side is pretty messed up i'm guessing the best option will be to replace it with definite original parts from the BMW repair shop. Make sure they get you the original parts. Some repair shops trick you into installing second hand parts. |
