Ride quality on 22s
Those of you that have 22" wheels, how is the ride quality on them? I have the 19" m sport wheels with rft and I'm looking to upgrade. Just wondering how will the ride be with regular tires on 22".
Thanks! |

To be honest I don't notice much of a difference from stock. Rides great!

My recent X5 loaner sported square 19" wheels and it felt like a completely different car to my X5 with staggered 20" wheels so it is hard to understand how those with 22" wheels do not notice any difference.

Going from 20" RFTS to 22" regular tires the ride quality actually improved slightly. The only time you notice the 22"s is when you hit some really broken roads. Consecutive bumps back to back.

Especially going from 19" RFT to 22" Traditional all Season pirelli tires.. I feel the traditional 22" rides smoother.

Pirelli is pretty much what everyone uses for this size.
Supposedly you can't get them anymore though... http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...hlight=pirelli Forum member Alan is selling a almost a new set in the classified section here http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...hlight=pirelli

I went from 20" to 22" only difference I feel is a bit more easy over bumps etc; likely due to non-run flats

22" non RFT compares to 20" RFT is night and day.
The 22" more smoother and forgiving on the car. The 20" RFT felt like you hit bigger bump or dip that it is. The tire just don't flex as much as non RFT.

This seems to be more of an RFT versus non-RFT question than the ride quality of 22" wheel versus 19" wheels. If the tires are the same type and make (non-RFT for example), then the 22" wheels will likely have a noticeably firmer (harder) ride than the 19" wheels on an X5.

22" tires compared to the 20" is only .8" thickness difference or you still have 3.5" sidewall on the 22".

I have the 19inch RFTs and was contemplating getting either the 20 inch staggered or 20 inch square setup with non RFTs. So basically everyone is saying I should feel an Improvement in ride quality? A worse ride is what I'm scared of

Still trying to keep somewhat on topic....I went from RF 20s to non RF 20s. My ride now is much smoother, quieter, and way less jittery when driving straight line. I also feel more confidence in both wet and cold (S. CA 'cold') conditions. Other than that, I hate non RFs 😁
