M Sport Steering Wheel vs X5M Steering Wheel

What is the difference if any?

I was in an X5M at the dealership and I felt the steering wheel was about an inch smaller and it felt sportier than what the pics of the M Sport steering wheel look like.

Is this the case? I would prefer the smaller radius of the X5M's steering wheel opposed to the M Sport wheel.

I just ordered a 2017 X5 w/ M Sport package. If the steering wheel is the same size and shape of the X5M steering wheel I will be happy.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I'm pretty sure the diameter and leather are the same. There are several differences though -

X5M steering wheel has ///M tri-stitching vs. black stitching on the M Sport
Different style/look to the paddle shifters
Lower trim piece is different, specifically the silver trim piece
Button configuration slightly different - obviously no 'M' button on the M Sport

It wouldn't surprise me if the X5M wheel was the same diameter, but with a slightly thicker rim, as per other BMW ///M wheels and MSport wheels.

I know the M3 wheel was a popular retro-fit to E8* and E9* cars to replace the OEM MSport wheel as the ///M3 one had a thicker rim.

This is good to hear. I did notice it looked slightly different in the trim.

The M button would be nice but that's another $50K option

They were the same diameter & thickness on the E70 for sure as I swapped out my M Sport for an X5M. On the F15, it sounds like they're the same in reading this post (member who swapped M Sport for X5M), specifically posts 113 & 116 -

I'm hoping I can swap my SE wheel for a OEM MSport one which has the thicker rim, as I'm finding the SE wheel far too slim for my liking after being used to a MSport wheel in my 135i for the past 6 years.

I was looking into that as well however the cost of one is close to 1000 i think. Tough one to swallow lol.

The differences between the m-sport and x5m steering wheels are the paddle shifters, the stitching and the ACC buttons are replaced with M1/M2 and the bottom end of the Y is hollow otherwise they are the same in terms of diameter and thickness

I'll be putting up with it then at that price

Like I'll be having to put up with the wretched useless audio hard drive function, which worked much better on my old 2011 E82 135i than it does on this new system - I mean WTF

Seriously wishing I'd bought the Porsche now

Confusing difference might be the steering wheel heating, if ur car has one then wheel is thicker

Thanks everyone for your input and clearing this issue up for me. Since the size/shape/diameter is similar to the X5M wheel, I think I'll be happy with the M Sport wheel.

Does that wheel disable the heated option? I know it does on the F8X cars.

What's the issue with the Hard Drive on the F15?

Macao is by a Country Mile worse than the BMW Infotainment system.

These statement are correct.
I did the retrofit on my F15 minus the stitching.
Thickness are the same, not sure if you have heating element though. Could be a little thicker.

AFAIK, all BMW Alcantara Steering wheels doesn't have heating option.

iDrive is the best system in business. Every review I've seen they just praise it being better than Merc, Porsche and Audi. It's so simple and responsive.

True Dat - no question about it.

Wife's new Macan is as bad if not worse than her old evoque.

iDrive is THE benchmark.

Its shit. (or rather its shit for the way I want to use it)

The older version in my previous E82 135i was perfect.

From what I've been reading up on it, it looks like I'll have to resort to putting the flash stick back in the USB socket and trying to play off of that rather than uploading to the hard drive, which kind of defeats the bloody point of it. Will try that at the weekend to see if its any better

Oh. You could either play via a USB or else down-load onto the HD from the USB. I have done both.
