Turn off the car, hit the button TWICE?

good afternoon...

once again, first BMW coming from Audio and MB world.

my 2014 X4 push button works great however a bit confused on shutting down the car. Do I always have to push the button twice?

Hitting it the first time will turn off the engine but radio/nav still on
hitting it again second time will off the radio

is this normal? I googled and few people told me to hold the button down for 2 seconds (didn't work, makes no difference). Or just walk out, close the door and lock it. Once it locks, it will turn everything off.

confused

Press once, the radio will time out after a few minutes
Press once and lock the door, radio goes off right away

You could also code the car to turn the iDrive off after you open the driver's door to exit the vehicle.

I didn't like it at first. I was used to all of my previous BMW's that you could just hit once and hold for a second or two and everything would shut off. (This is why your google search came up with that.... that's how it used to be). But, like most change, I've gotten used to it. If I'm anywhere but home, I don't worry about it 'cause I'm going to lock it anyway, which shuts everything down. In my garage however, I don't lock it so it was kind of irritating at first, but I usually remember to hit it twice now. But even if I don't, I know it's going to time out and shut down on it's own in a few minutes. I still don't like it, but not a big deal.

I recently switched to BMW from MB and this is one thing i just don't understand. I also noticed if don't press the button twice or lock the door my phone stays connected to the car till the iDrive shuts down. I guess i have to looking into coding the car to turn the iDrive off after you open the driver's door to exit the vehicle.

You'll get used to it eventually. It's not that big a deal to push the button twice.

The harder part is figuring out what to do when you pull up to a drive in ATM or something and the auto stop turns off the engine. I never remember how many times I need to press the button.

Step 1. Push the button once which shuts off the engine..

Step 2. Get out of the vehicle.

Step 3. Press lock button on keyfob or if you have comfort access press the ridges on the door handle to lock the car. Everything shuts down.

PS: you do NOT have to press the button twice.

Not sure what you mean here. Are you saying you use the button to restart the motor? You should never need to touch the button during normal driving if you have this feature enabled because iDrive stays on and the motor should wake up with the release of the brake pedal or you jerking/turning the steering wheel a bit.

Coding it just makes it convenient, but as Kzang stated, just lock up the car normally via any means and rest assured iDrive will shutdown and never drain your battery. Remember, even if you sit in the car and listen to music with the motor off, you'll eventually get the warning that iDrive will shutdown unless you hit the button again. There are fail-safes all over this car...

When auto stop start is enabled and the car is on a stop, it will turn off the engine temporarily but if you open the door while its stopped then the engine will shut off completely and you will need to press the start engine again.

Also, I tend to be very inconsistent between just keeping my foot on the brake while using the ATM or putting the transmission park. One doesn't require a button push, the other does.

As said above, you'll get used to the "two press".

Yep, it's quite easy. "boom-boom", it's as fast and easy as only pressing it once.

is it really that difficult to understand how to shut down the car?

Push 1 turns off motor. At this point, you can turn off electricals be either locking the car or pushing the button again.

I've seen some drive up ATM users act like it's a walk up machine. Totally out of their car. These are the same people who have to open their doors to pay a toll.

I HATE these people... I just feel like people in this area ( NY/NJ ) just don't understand what the left lane is for because they drive so freakin slow in the left lane and either don't seem to look back behind them to see if they are holding up traffic or are just asses.

I have seen plenty of drive-up ATM machines and parking pay station gates with island curbs that stick out so far you are forced to open your door if you don't want to curb your rims.
