I never said "combined" mpg, i always used city/highway US standard and 38mpg was plain conversion from your 45.6 number. And if you look at my estimate in bold, i said 35 highway, which is realistic IMO i think "combined" for 35d, should be around 27-28 US mpg |

Okay, let's not get into a debate. I agree that the X5d will see a couple mpg less than the 5 series diesel. The Euro MPG ratings have always been optimistically high. Are all European roads down-hill? |

These possible numbers seem to be quite an increase in MPG from my current 35d which is 19/26! Actually I get more like 21.5 -22 in city driving, but I am not thrashing it around, and have gotten 28-29 on interstate driving keeping it between 70-75. Should we expect such a big improvement? As it stands, diesel gas is about 30 cents more than premium where I live. Too tiresome crunching numbers, but now with 27 mpg on the new 35i, I am thinking about going back to regular gas. Guess I will need to wait until the final numbers come out and decide.

Official EPA numbers for 35D?
My wife just ordered her 2014 X5 xDrive35d today, and the paperwork we got with our order shows 23/31 mpg (city/highway). I'm pretty dissappointed by those numbers.

I was expecting something in the high 30's, closer to the Euro specs. I was also expecting a govt rebate for buying a diesel, but that's not available for the 2014 models.

A UK gallon is 1.2 US gallons - so 23/31mpg in US is the same as 27.6/37.2mpg in the UK Last edited by NoPII; 12-19-2013 at 12:09 AM.. |

Compared to the 2013 x5 diesel, city mpg is 21% better and highway mpg is 19% better. Compared to the 2014 x35i, city mpg is 28% better and highway mpg is 13% better. The 2014 x5 35d also gets better mpg than all the key 2014 4wd diesel competitors: ML 350 Bluetec is 20/28, Audi Q7 is 19/28, Jeep Grand Cherokee is 21/28. As for a federal tax credit for diesels, that program expired at the end of 2010. BMW used to offer their sizable "eco credit" on diesels (it was generally assumed that they did this because they needed to sell more diesels in order to get their overall fleet mileage down), but they have I believe more than offset the elimination of that program by reducing the formerly hefty price premium of the diesel x5 (vs the 35i gas) down to a more manageable $1,500 for the 2014 models. I genuinely believe that you and your wife got a great deal on a great car when you ordered your 2014 X5d. Enjoy it when it arrives! |

Also, keep in mind that the X5 weighs around 5000 pounds and BMW buyers expect decent performance. I'm not sure high 30s mpgs are possible with current technology given those parameters. |

US EPA is kind of pessimistic for BMWs, not sure why
But then again, I beat EPA numbers by large margin in all my bimmers 335i with N54 was rated at 26, what? Cruising on the highway i was getting 32-33 minimum and with light foot could get it to 35mpg. X6M - same thing, rated 17, got constantly 20-21, with light foot 23mpg 2001 330i - not sure of the EPA, but did 34-37mpg easily 35d will easily do 33-35 in normal highway driving |
