Great DIY! My first post here, I'm reading for some years now, but after the purchase of my recent car (BMW X5 F15 M50d) I thought it would be nice to contribute as well.

Since I've noticed the fan in the center console was sometimes active (I don't/didn't use the cradle at all), I found it pitty to loose that functioniality. I've drilled some holes and attached (superglue and silicone kit) the fan to the back of the ordered plate. See picture for details.

Looks good. But isn't the fan is located on the top right from your picture, instead of where your holes are on the lower left.

That's right, but space is to tight in that area. Also the back of the blind plate had a very nice spot for attaching the fan without much effort, that's why I've placed it there. I've filled the area around the fan (between the plate and fan) with silicone kit so all air will blow out through the holes I've drilled.

Ahh, got it.
How long have you waited to find out that the fan is working?

By accident, I had a box of chewing gum in the center console on a hot day. Was driving for some time when I took one out and noticed that it was cold. The box had been in front of the fan and that kept it cold. Also when I wanted to do this DIY, the engine was running, and the fan was spinning, so I had to stop the engine before I could proceed. I have no clue when it starts spinning. I had to check a couple of times after this DIY to actually feel the air flow through the holes. At this point I'd say it's random!

Great thread for a problem that should not be needed. I will order one for my Wife's 2015 X5, and one form my 2015 330i, and am wondering if there is a way of using the antennae extender from the piece removed, and moving it up to the area of the non smokers package plate. This is where I throw my phone, and I live and commute in an area of questionable reception.

A short antennae cable fed under the console would be cheap, and the process should not be too difficult.

Suggestions anyone?

Cheers,

Ken

Unless you know how to rewire the phone wires to become an antenna coax, it won't be possible.

Extending the coax is the easy part, it's just cut n splice together to extend. The hard part is how do u connect the coax to ur phone. I believe the coax is intergrated into the phone cradle n uses the data port connection to connect as an external antenna. Basically once u remove the cradle it renders the coax cable useless by itself.

I was under the impression that the antennae was in the base of the unit, and acted like an induction coil. No physical contact with the phone connection. Could be completely wrong, as I have been in the past.

Cheers,

Ken

No screw no clips. Haha.
I can order it for you if you want. I have more parts coming in for my customer anyway.
Hi, if you remove the smokers package, do you lose the 12v connector? I use to take 12v from that connector for my hardwired GoPro...........so if I loose it is not worth it for me

no u do not, u keep the cigarette lighter in place. the non smokers package is really just the ash tray that u r removing, replaced with a new rubber tray that does not have the hole in it for putting out cigarettes. i THOUGHT i would loose the cigarette lighter as well before i replaced mine but it did not.

Doing this on Saturday. Wish our suv's had more storage space and USB connections Instead it's full of cigarette lighters. Come BMW get with the times its 2017 and add more USB ports. I've seen the same lighters in my 1989 E30. Looking forward to this mod. Thanks for all the detailed pics.

Wow that was easy 10 min. However I got ripped off. No fan was installed. Lol. Maybe because we have cold winters. Did u guys throw out the cradle. I don't think it's ever going back in. Great diy and mod if u want the extra compartment space. Thanks Ben! For posting this.
