End of warranty check coming up for me, but what to do with mods I have?
Going soon to my local dealership for complimentary end of warranty check-up. Have some questions for experts here on forum, forgive me if they were already answered:
1. I have a 2014 x5 bought as a CPO after 1st owner's 3 year lease ended. So I thought I had 2 years of CPO on top of 4 years original warranty (I swear I remember sales manager saying that when I was buying it), but apparently I only have 1 CPO year after original 4 years expired. Does that sound about right? 2. I have x5m air filters mod. So if they will open airbox cover - they might not put it back due to liability etc issues or simply because they might say x5m air filters won't fit and they won't do it. So to avoid any possible issues should I just tell service manager upfront to not bother/touch airbox? I'm not concerned about warranty related to air filters at all or even engine - as it works like a clock (knock on the wood). I don't want to complicate things for myself and for them too. 3. I'll show them SIB for control arms, but as I understand it's only free under original 4 year warranty correct? 4. My main goal of check-up is to see if there're any gasket issues or any tiny leaks that I didn't noticed (I don't have lift and it's hard to check for leaks/gaskets without it). That's why I'm actually going there lol. Besides, IMHO that's the only thing that can realistically fail in near future. So I'm just afraid they will do a bunch of useless (for me) checks like tires, oil level etc - that I already know everything about myself, but they will skip gasket checks - because in email I got that complimentary check-up really looks just like a glorified "fluids top up and tire check" lol. So should I ask service manager to specifically check for any leaks and gaskets? I don't want to be a dushebag lol Thank you |

I would ask them to check for leaking fluids. Tell them you are concerned about a possible leak. I’d also be up front about the M air filters and ask them not to change them. But I have a good relationship with my dealer’s service department since I have been using them for 20+ years, so that probably helps too.

Just keep an eye on what you have before the check-up and after.
The main reason for them to call you in for complimentary check-up is either to sell you a new car or sell you on extended warranty. To tell you the truth, they don't care if you install Toyota air filter in there instead of the original one. Unless.... If you are really knowing the dealer and almost everyone there. My dealer, after 10 years and 6 cars, they don't even bother up sell me anything.

Tell them to check the car for oil leaks. Oil pan gasket, rear crankshaft seal.
I wouldn’t worry about the air filters. It’s a BMW part after all. I told them not to touch it.

Update: I went there and turns out I have warranty till 2020 Service manager was very nice guy and showed me their inner paperwork - it said 03/2020 and 100k miles. Could it be that some extended CPO warranty was included (or slipped in for me to sign while I was distracted by sales manager lol) initially when I financed the car?
So service manager told me the email letter was wrong about end of warranty and apologized. He asked me if something is wrong with the car, I said nothing is wrong. He changed a key-fob battery and told me that complimentary end of warranty check will be next year. So I left lol. I'm an idiot. Should have inquired about control arm SIB, but I'm pretty sure it's not covered by CPO anyway. I'll use a Mavericks excellent DIY on control arm swap! Last edited by DuSh; 01-28-2019 at 07:14 PM.. |
