Automobile speculates on and previews the next generation X5 and X6, which they've labeled as 2014 models and placed their debut of the X5 at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, with the X6 to debut six months later.

So what can we expect for the third generation X5 and second generation X6? According to Automobile's speculations:

TECHNOLOGY

- Both will be based on a new components set known in-house as "X for all." This includes new axles derived from the F10 5-series which will, according to BMW, reduce each SUV's weight by up to 330-pounds.

- The new component set will unfortunately eliminate the X6's torque-vectoring rear differential, an effective but heavy and costly feature. Instead, BMW will offer optional active steering, self-leveling air suspension and Adaptive Drive, which employs adjustable anti-roll bars.

- The 3-way damper calibration system (normal, sport, comfort) and the related engine/transmission control are expected to be included at no cost.

- The new X5/X6 will also see many of BMW's newest and best driver assistance technology - lane departure warning and compensation system, night vision, park assist, traffic sign recognition, surround view cameras, active cruise control, etc.

STYLING

- It's suggested that the 2014 X5 will look the swoopy lines of the current BMW models, which we take to mean that it may have straighter geometric and more classic BMW lines.

- The X6 styling changes will include a rear roofline which allows more headroom and better visibility. Wider rear doors for easier entry and exit. An overall restyling is of course also expected.

- The new interiors will borrow heavily from the 5-series GT's gorgeous interior and will feature glass sunroof, power rear seats, and a multi-use split tailgate.

POWERPLANTS

- Expect M models again of the X5 and X6. The article claims that the models will retain the same S63 4.4L twin turbo V8, but with a power bump and more efficiency.

- Also claimed are two new 4-cylinder options - a 2.0L diesel good for 245hp/260lb-ft torque, and the N20 2.0L gasoline engine (already seen in the current X1 28i) with the same output.

- A plug-in hybrid X5 and X6 are also said to be planned.

- Finally, a 405hp straight six twin-turbo diesel for the 50d version is rumored.

* The rendering above is only a speculative CGI of the next generation X6.

Seems like these twins just came out. Overall sounds like a nice progression forwards though.

How can the x6 come out just 6 months after the x5? Wasn't there a longer break between the two?

Huh? Should that word be "lose"? If so, it doesn't really match up with the rendering.

Agree with SamS. The sentence makes no sense. Can anyone clarify? Of course, since I had my 2012 delivered yesterday, I am curious....

I really hope the X5 will be as good looking as it is now. its absolutely perfect the way it is, Id hate to see it go

and for the X6, more headroom in the back? seems like its gonna turn into a GT-looking thing

405hp diesel?
Sign me up.. Maybe that's the rumored tri-turbo diesel..
600+ lb/ft torque with that much hp..
25-30 mpg..?

That 2.0 diesel would be awesome in a 1 series hatch/coupe in US..

"traffic sign recognition", hum if it's a country stop sign will it automatically blast it with a shotgun.

Seriously loss of the torque-vectoring rear differential is sad this makes it corner so well.

I like it, I noticed the body will be made to cover the rear wheels rather than the flared guards currently used now…not sure how that will work for me….

That'll be a worry for me I think as my wife has already scratched the flared guards at the rear exiting a carpark...

She didn't realise the rear width of the car was so hard to judge as if you really look at the width, it is nearly the width of the side wing mirrors which most cars don’t protrude out at the back that far…..oh well, just have to get it fixed I suppose..

I'd really like to see the X5 with the hatch glass opening separate from the liftgate.

It's rather annoying when I want to transport items that are longer than the trunk space and I can't have them hang out like I could on other suvs

2014 X6

Does anyone know exactly when the next generation X6 will come out? 2014 or 2015 model.

I want to order one and patiently willing to hold off until 2014. If it comes out in 2015, I don't know if I can wait that long I can't stand it when I buy a new vehicle then the following year a new version/model comes out with upgrades....will drive me nuts.

The 2013 X6 is just getting it's LCI starting next week, I can't imagine they'd bring that out for only one model year and then do a full redesign for 2014.
