Speed Variance from Waze
I've noticed that the speedo on my (stock) '16 M-sport is consistently reading 2 to 4mph faster than my speed as reported on the Waze iPhone app. The variance increases as my speed increases.
In my last ride (a 2011 JGC Summit) Waze and the truck speed were identical. My X5 has only 3500 miles but I'm not happy at the possibility of accumulating close to 5% of "phantom mileage" ! Could it be time for a visit to the dealer for a speedo calibration test....?!?! Anyone else seeing this ? |

From my experience all the BMW's I've had the speedometer is usually 3 to 4 miles faster than the actual. I'm guessing it is the same with the F15.

It is normal for BMW's and many other cars to have speedos reading at least 2% high. Some are as much as 5% high. Regulations in Europe dictate the accuracy of speedometers be within a certain percentage, plus or minus, but the minus side is basically zero. In other words, they can be a little off on the over but they cannot be even a little off on the under, so to play it safe, they tend to calibrate them with a few percent fudge factor on the over. Note that this is a percentage, so if yours is 3% off for instance, 60mph would read about 62. 90 would read closer to 93. Anything that is GPS based will most likely be very accurate.

It's normal. 80 mph on the speedo is 78 on my GPS.
It doesn't really bother me the slightest except maybe I'm wondering if my odometer says I've done 50,000 miles (when the warranty lapses) does it mean in truth I've only done 48750 miles?

But what if the 'miles' part of the equation was right but 'BMW hours' are shorter than Universal Time? Mr Einstein would have something to say about your relative velocity through space-time that even a good traffic lawyer couldn't refute...

In the EU there is a law that says that a speedometer must always give a higher value than the real speed:

Don't need to worry about that. The mph "calibration" comes after the odometer extracts the distance part of the equation. The odometers have to be correct or the manufacturers would get sued. Not to mention various laws and regulations around the world. Plus Einstein and the space time continuum.

Good stuff, thanks guys!
I would not have guessed that the odometer and speedo function independently, or if they don't, that the odometer is designed to account for the inaccuracy of the speedo so as to yield accurate mileage... |
