Brakes

New to me BMW X6M Competition with 24,000 miles. I just picked it up a week ago. Brakes started squeaking Friday at slow speed stopping (<5mph), like stop and go traffic. It’s very loud and annoying. So loud people look.

I’ve read posts where this is common.

Is there a fix? This is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks in advance

You might want to try the F95/96 forums for better help. This is the F85/86 forum (older Gen), so the owners here may not be aware of the issues with the newer model ones.

Yes, these brakes squeak. Your best bet is to change them out for carbon ceramic pads, this will eliminate that annoying squeal. Power Stop sells these pads, and you can purchase them from Rock Auto on the cheap.

Your other course of action, would be to completely remove the pads and thoroughly clean the rotor and calipers, and lubricate the pads with anti-squeal compound and anywhere the pads would touch the calipers. Because brake squeal is caused by vibration.

I recently bought a '16 F85 and the squeaking was horrendous.
As others have said, I bought power stop pads from Amazon (under $100) and the squeaking stopped immediately. As an added bonus, the brake dust is much improved also.

Can vouch for this. Huge improvement due to no noise!

We are another happy PowerStop user. Inexpensive and easy DIY (if you are familiar with brake jobs). No more squeal (the reason we did the change) and no brake dust.

To be totally honest, I have Power Stop Carbon Ceramic pads on both my AMG and X5M. On my X5M my brakes squeak, especially in the morning. I think that it's moisture that settles on the rotors, especially now that we are rolling into winter. But once the rotors and pads get heat into the squealing goes away. It is really eye piercing if you reverse. I've been trying to figure this out, since my AMG never goes it in forward or reverse direction.

When I installed these pads, I used BG Brake Squeal to saturate the pads with this black liquid. I think that after about two years, the BG liquid has most likely dissipated, and the pad is no longer lubricated. But this is something that I can live with. Because the nature of performance brakes is brake squeal, if you don't believe me, then get carbon ceramic rotors, they squeal a lot.

I've been contemplating buying a M3 Competition with Carbon Ceramic Brakes, and they do squeal at times. But generally will last to 100,000 miles or more if not tracked, and are fade resistant.

Interesting. I have the Carbon ceramics on my F85 and I have no squeals. As a matter a fact I was thinking about how quite they have been and what a pleasure not to hear that dreaded screech! I’m in NY and the stop and go traffic would be a killer with the old brakes.

🤔I wonder if the difference between yours and mine is that I did not add any BG brake squeal when I had the brakes installed.

Power Stop Z23 on X5M and zero noise in over a year. So much less brake dust too. Best thing I've done to the car.

3 years into the Powerstops and not one single squeek or squeal.

+1 on the PowerStops. So much more refined without the squeak. They just feel like brakes. Doubt anyone would be able to tell a braking difference from OEM.

Took 4 hours or so to do both ends, change the fluid, and the sensors. Biggest disruption is that despite having a complete tool set, turns out I didn’t have a t55 for the front calipers.
