All engine oil dropped from engine upon start up.

Hi! Started up my 2017 X5M and instantaneously all of the engine oil blew out, with force from the bottom of the engine. What a mess. I didn’t notice it for a minute until out of the driveway (got a low engine pressure warning). Off to the dealer. 42k miles… give me a break!!

WOW. Interested in what they find. Oil pan gaskets leak on these things, glad you caught it quickly!

That suxs. Seems a little of an aggressive leak for a gasket? Oil filter housing cracked?

It was dry upon start up, maybe an oil cooler hose? The puddle is over 6’ wide so it had pressure.

Oh man. That sucks. Hope there is no internal damage. Clean up must have been a pain in the a$$.

Turn out the OEM oil filter actually blew apart or cracked in 3 spots. The dealer tech has never heard of such a thing.

I guess I could see that causing an overpressure issue in the filter housing and then blow the seals…

You should have them tear apart the entire oil system and check for leaky or blown lines. Gotta be sure no filter parts got sucked in. Of which, you could have them drop the oil pan and make sure you oil pump chain is tightened to spec too…

Lol, at the dealer saying he's never head of this. Whilst not common, are a known failure point. Its plastic, it fails.

Have they done any further diagnostics? Any damage to the engine?

Did the dealer perform the last oil change or dis you do it yourself? I'm just wondering if they will take responsibility if anything needs to be repaired or if they will just say you must have done something wrong.

Wow! I've heard of this happening a few times with is why I purchased the Future Classics oil filter housing cap for my 18 F85. Also helps make oil changes that much easier.

I do hope this is resolved for you above the standard and you're back on the road soon.

Update: dealer order new filter and housing. Engine sounds good/normal. Oil pressure is fine if not a bit high. Dealer sent oil pressures to BMW for confirmation. Dealer is “making a case with BMW given the odd situation”. Whatever that means. In record should something related occur. Not sure what to do now.

Sounds like they are doing the right thing and setting things up so any oil related future issue can be resolved, so that's good. Just stinks "hoping" everything is.

Dealer is saying it’s the oil pump pressure relief valve sticking. Replace pump, good as new.
