Just received a call from the dealer. BMWNA has recommended to replace the bearings & some nuts. Won't be ready till early next week. Don't care how long it stays with them as long as they fix it this time.

IIRC I think someone else earlier in this thread had that done as well after a while?

Only time will tell now. I've had the spacers placed last month & now getting new bearings. If this doesn't fix it, it goes back to the dealer for the third & final "fix". After that, I'm down with BMW. Staying with P-cars. I've had much better luck with them.

I just got a call from the dealer on my 2nd "fix". He said they just needed to retorque the lug nuts, which I find mind boggling since I've swapped the wheels myself and torqued everything to the appropriate 102 foot/lbs. And with the sound coming back after the first "fix" how are the lugs mysteriously loosening on their own? This is nonsense. I'm not looking forward to my picking up the car today. I have no idea how they're going to explain this. What odds do you want to give that the pinging will come back?

God Dammit... Clicking is back. 2 months since the spacer fix, brake squealing worst than ever.
My 991 GTS brakes don't even squeak and it's a high performance car. BMW has no excuses for this quality. I'm f*cking done messing with this... Ugh. Those looking to buy a BMW X5M, be warned. It feels good to buy a car that's made in America, but every single BMW I've had the most issue with was the X5. I went through an E70 X5 lemon, now this issue with the F85.

Sad thing is this is an easy fix for BMW if they spent a little $. Timken bearing hubs have been around FOREVER. QUIT the nicknack spacers, etc. Redesign the the hub with oversized Timkens and be done with it. I can live with the brake squeal as a wash stops it for 2 weeks. But jeez , fix the hub already. Everything else with the M is killer.

Alright, I've got to rant a bit here, so please forgive me. I go back to the dealer to pickup the car yesterday. He says all is fixed, all they had to do was retorque the lugs to 103 ft/lbs. That, first off, sounded so bogus considering I'd already torqued them myself correctly and it had no impact. But I get there, and I ask him about the spacer, and he just seems to have NO idea WTF he's talking about. I mean it was pathetic. He had mentioned the spacer fix to me the day before (I had the previous repair records in the glove box of the car, so I couldn't look at what they had done last time, but I thought they'd done the spacer), after saying he didn't know what they did last time (same dealer!), and then did a 180 on pickup and said the spacers weren't necessary. Just lug torque. I look over the repair receipt he hands me and it has a line item about discs removed, bearing hubs cleaned and sanded, and I ask him about this - his reply, I swear to God is "those things aren't accurate, they're just codes, they don't correlate with the actual work". I say WTF but OK, I'm getting out of there.
So I get in the car. Good news, it sounds good (now). I look carefully over all of the repair records. I discover: 1) they did the spacer last time, it was a bit hard for me to understand the layout of the repair order, but the part # is there for 2 spacers: 2) this time the repair order states that they did INDEED clean/sand hub surfaces, and then some really cryptic stuff about this PUMA case and swapping out wheels, and retorquing the bolts. So this dude just lied to me, apparently. Can anyone else make any sense out of this??? (Hopefully the images show up...)

Jcfay- I think you need to find a new dealership! Your work order looks to be a disaster. I've never, ever, at any BMW dealership, seen something so jumbled and messy. It looks like they have no clue what they are doing at all, or how to repair the issue at hand. BMW corporate at this point says to replace the bearings if the slip disc repair doesn't correct the issue. They do NOT say to replace your brake disks, or swap wheels from another vehicle, and re-torque to a certain spec. If the dealership hasn't done the friction plate repair, and then moved on to new bearings, they are idiots and not speaking with the mothership.
For my X5 M, I've had so many issues with it, I've seriously contemplated trading it in on our M4 when it is finally out of that Stop Sale disaster BMW has going on right now. I could use the M4 while I look for a different SUV. I noticed yesterday the dealership ripped the leather dash when they swapped out the center channel speaker. They are going to repair it, hopefully without replacing the entire dashboard, and will be able to make it look factory new. They seem confident they're able to do that with a leather specialist. It goes in Friday for that repair. I kind of like the idea of starting over, with a clean slate, with a new vehicle. While I love my X5 M, it has a lot of irritation and frustration baked into it by this point. |

I'm just going to drive it like I stole it and wait for the noise to reappear. I'm sure it will. But I'm still really disappointed and pissed. Like most of us. And having come over from AMG, it's really making me wonder if the move was a wise one...

I have an X6M, same problem, had it fixed, and it came back in 3 weeks.
Its a lease so I am not as pissed off but you shouldn't have this issue in your top of the line model. |

Well picked up the car from the dealer and sound is gone now. Here is work:
HOWEVER. When I parked the car in my garage, I noticed the service guys dinged the crap out of my calipers! Both LEFT and RIGHT side is dinged up like crazy. I assume they think I'm some sort if an idiot and I wouldn't notice this. It is so obvious it's not even funny. I can't wait till I talk to them on Monday morning. To add insult to injury...grease/oil all over the driver side. This is the final straw. I am sick and tired of this crap. I have never been treated like this by Porsche dealers. They take very good care of the car when I bring it in for service. Good night and thank you for all the fish, BMW. |

neurotichamster, if you have issues getting the grease off, use LeatherMaster Leather Dye Transfer Cleaner. When the dealership got grease all over my red seats in the X5 M, that was the only product I found that would remove the grease stains completely. Use it sparingly, by lightly dampening a microfiber cloth with the product, and then follow with a clean microfiber that's quite damp with fresh clean water.
Sorry to hear about your calipers. They should really have been more careful. They should replace them at no charge. Check your rims, make sure they, too, are ok. Especially the holes where the lug nuts are. I've had rims damaged by dealerships there before. |

I took plenty of pictures of the seat to show the dealer on Monday. I will examine the wheels today...although first look this morning was free from damage. |

I've been lurking on the this tread for any evidence of a solid solution; I have the problem as well (when I brought it in for service -- they told me they had rocks in between the calipers and it briefly was fixed and then back!). Now after reading this post, I know I have the same issue that everyone does. I am so disappointed (I had a m4 cvt and had the dreaded tin can issue as well). WTF BMW! Otherwise love the X5M.

So my SA sent the best technician test drive my car. They said the noise is there, but the click is cause by the floating rotor pins and not the bearing itself. So normal.
How is it normal for a $113k Luxury SUV to make so much noise cruising around?
