2014 F15 50i experience share

hello folks,

just want to share my experience with my 50i and hopefully it may help 50i owners.
  • engine: N63TU
  • Year:2014
  • M-sport package+premium pkg
  • Mileage: 153,000KM=95625 miles
  • Currency: Canadian $
  • oil change interval: every 10K before 80K, every 8K after 80K

1. Front right tie rod changed @78000 KM (may hit a puddle hole) $625(INDY: parts+labour+aligment)

2. Spark Plug change 92000KM, $450

3, rotors and pads change, two pairs $1250 (parts and labour)

4, Rear air bag leak, appears around 110K KM, then it got worse and changed around 120K KM $1200 (parts and labour).
rear air bag leak seems very common on this gen F15, they will go eventually.

5. one rear middle PDA senor dead: $475 parts and labour, bit pricey for one senor since they have to uninstall rear bumper to replace it.

6. Here is the tricky part:

cant recall when it gets started, mayber over 100K KM. it gets worse during winter.

100K-140K
symptoms: initially, engine has noticeable vibration when RPM drops from 1K to 600, however it doesn't fluctuate. when i reverse from garage and start to accelerate to 7KM/h, all of sudden, it feels like the engine is losing power and jerk. it gets better when car is warm.

140K

it gets bit worse but tolerable,

152K(currently)

after i return from 3 weeks vacation, it is no longer tolerable.

when i did a cold start the car in the morning, much bigger vibration and rpm fluctuation, it settled afterwards. no code.

next morning, same thing; CEL poped out and flashing, drive train malfunction error message displayed. then i drove to my indy, he ran the code immediately.

cylinder #1, #2,#4 misfire, my mechanic said it could be many reasons,
well, we have to start from the coils, then he replaced 3 coils. $370(parts and labour).

it drives okay after the change, it still has the same feeling but it does improved.

next day, cold start again, drivetrain malfunction again, but NO CEL, back to the shop again, #1 and # 3 misfire, then changed the plug for #1 and coil for #3. $230 parts and labour.

transfer case fluid changed as well $130

car feels bit better, no more malfunction and CEL.
however, it still jerks when i start to accelerate around 6 or 7km after pulling out from garage

i will get all rest 4 coils and 7 plugs replaced today, will keep update the result

I have a 2014 X5 50i and have been having a jerk feeling when initially moving off since 30,000 km (currently 55,000 km). It got to the point where it was doing it when warm as well. Never got a CEL. Mine presents like the engine is about to stall, but then the engine rpm jumps to stop a stall.

I reset the engine adaptations using ISTA+ and this made a huge difference.

After resetting engine adaptations the issues was gone for the next 100 kms and then came back to only doing it when cold.

My feeling about this is that mine is adapting the engine poorly for low throttle input. The first 100 kms after the reset was a dream to drive. There could be something out of spec (coils, vacuum or air leak).

I also thought that maybe an update to firmware with another adaptation reset might help.

I’m interested to see what you find out.

Replace all plugs and coils. You don’t need cel to tell you that.

This.

And if you have any mechanical ability at all, you can do this yourself and save a boatload. Plugs and coils on this vehicle is an hour job, two hours tops even for a novice. You should be able to get 8 new plugs and 8 new coils for under $250US.

guess what.

my indy replaced all rest 4 coils for right bank #5.6.7.8. and 8 new NGK plugs.
fire up then all right bank mis fire. lol he is like WTF.
he exchanged coils and plugs for right bank and left bank, still shows mis fire #5.6.7.8.
finally, he left the car to charge the battery for 1 hour. error messages are gone.
however, i can still feel it is bit shaky, he said it may need ECU software update and it may take few hours. my ECU software never updated since 2016.

I have not done it yet but am planning to soon. Use ista-p and a genuine icom next, let ista come up with a test plan and update everything it finds necessary. Make sure you're hooked up to a power supply that can do 70amp or more not a trickle charger.

Why would you replace coils and plugs without any mis-fires being reported from the car? Idle speed is not exactly stressing out the ignition system. Car runs great at any RPM once it’s moving.

You could try resetting the engine adaptations. I was quite surprised at how much different it drove after the reset. 10,000 km later it’s still running better than it was.

Follow the instructions after the reset, the main one is to let it idle for 2 mins before driving it.

update

so my indy updated the software for DME and tranny.

it runs a lot better.

1. noticeable vibration reduction when RPM drops to 600RPM during cold start
2. smoother when car backs up.
3. much smoother when accelerate from 0-10KM/h,

Just curious, how much oil has your vehicle consumed during its lifetime. My 50i burns 1qt every 2000miles and behaves the same way where I can feel an idle stumble but it's not generating codes. I'm at 100000km BTW and its beginning to get noticable.

The symptoms are similar to 335s with carbon build up.

Have you taken a peek at the valves from the intake side or inside of the cylinder with a camera?

TBH, i have around 4 times "add oil notice " messages within 153K KM.

first one, around 62K
second one around 80K
Third one around 90K.
fourth one around 110K.

i havent had any since then, i change my oil every 8K KM.

it may consume bit oil since it is v8, i think yours is irregular if it needs 1qt every 2000miles=3200KM.

no, i dont have the equipment to check the inside.
