Figured I'd bump this with the influx of all the used X5 buyers.. they'd be happy to see a freebie in their secret storage compartment.

When I picked up my F15 X5 last year (July/2020)...I knew that it had the option that should include the cargo net. When I went to take it for a test drive...I took a peek after opening the left cargo panel...and sure enough...there was the brand new net still in its little plastic bag...never opened, never used.

I also got another surprise...the box in the pic below was still in the cargo area...and brand new floor liners were installed (front/rear)...and a quick peek into the box revealed a set of 4 oe rubber floor mats...used but still in good shape. Then when I got home and pulled the rubber floor mats out to give them a good cleaning since I prefer them over the floor liners...the original carpeted mats were also inside the box still in their original plastic bag...never used.

Found this net the day after getting the car!

However I never unwrapped it, still in the cubby with the plastic around it.

What I have been missing is a net to put up behind the front seats, for when the rear seats are down. If you have nothing to hold the luggage in the rear it is bound to hit you very hard in case of an emergency braking or some accident. On the E39 wagons the rear "rollo" (the one with the luggage compartment cover and the net that goes up into the roof) served a double purpose - it could be moved forward and mounted to hooks in the roof and serve as safety for the front whenever the rear was loaded with stuff.. Now.. would this X5 mount in a similar manner? I´ve got to unwrap it and check!

No, the net referred to in this thread is an “envelope” cargo net that you can stretch across the cargo bay at the rear (near the tailgate) or further back near the 2nd row rear seat backs...and is normally used “vertically”. You can see a pic of what it looks like in the very first post in this thread...as well as the 1st page in this thread. . It is #5 in the diagram below and is called “flexnet” in the part database:

{part nbr 51 47 7 332 111}

If need be, you probably could use it horizontally to secure something laying on the cargo floor since it comes with the S493A storage pkg which provides the two “lashing rails” (#1 in diagram above) and four movable/lockable “lashing eye” tie-downs (#4 in diagram above).

The rear cargo net used to separate the rear cargo area or the expanded cargo area that would connect to the roof liner down to the cargo floor is another item that can be purchased as an accessory:

part nbr 51 47 2 286 421

In my opinion, the e39 was the pinnacle of cargo cover/cargo net design and implication. Not only were the two covers combined into the same “cassette”...but BMW also included a “holder” for the cassette when not in use to cover the rear cargo area. Let’s say you were out and purchased or picked up something you weren’t expecting to bring home but needed to remove the cargo cover due to the items height. In the e39, you simply removed it from its regular area and can mount it to the holders built into the riser of the rear bottom seat cushions. This could even allow you to carry a rear seat passenger if you only needed to lower one seat back to expand the rear cargo area...and the rear seat passenger wouldn’t have to worry about stepping on the cargo cover. This was also the location to put the cargo cover if you needed to use the separation net as well as using the expanded rear cargo area after folding down both rear seats to divide the rear from the front. Again, not sure why BMW abandoned this set-up after the e39...I found it to be the best in form and function.

Again, this “flexnet” is only about 12”-15” high and is an “envelope” design that can be stretched across the rear. I use it everyday for my briefcase and lunch and is mounted across the rear at the tailgate. I open the gate and slip both down inside the net to prevent both from sliding/spilling on my commute from home to work and vice versa. I also use it if a go to the grocery store and purchase something that needs to remain upright (milk/juice/etc...or something that can easily roll...like a melon...or bruise/crush/crack like fruit/bread/chips/eggs.

There’s also a larger net that is square that can be used to secure cargo horizontally in the cargo area.

part nbr 51 47 9 410 838

Qsilver7 That's very informative! I think I once searched for that part number, only to find it not available anywhere, discontinued I think. Do you know of a place that sells it? We often drive around with cargo and would want to bring more, but don't due to the safety aspects of not having such a net installed.. Talking about the 51 47 2 286 421

It does appear to be an elusive item to find. I can only suggest to keep checking the internet...using the BMW 11 digit part nbr. Especially some of the big sites for used/new items like amazon.com, eBay, and alibaba.com. Perhaps one may show up as a seller comes across one, or is selling one they own after selling their f15 X5.

New F15 owner. I found the brand new net in the left side panel. However no sign of the 4 movable/lockable tie-downs. Can someone confirm the part number, I have 51477146024 from realoem but I'm not sure it is specific to 2018 F15.

I’m pretty sure if they fit one f15...they fit all f15. You can verify this by simply clicking on the 11 digit part number on the realoem.com website. Clicking on the part number will reveal any other BMW models that use the same part number. If the part only fits a specific build date range...then that info will be listed in the TO & FROM columns in the part number index.

If you can access Realoem.com, then the answers to your questions could be right at your fingertips. If you see blue text on realoem’s site, it means that its a clickable link...which means there’s additional information.

PS...did you look below the cargo floor? Perhaps the previous owner removed them and stored them in the place designed for them to be stored when not being used or not wanting them locked into the rails.

Sad, mine doesn't have it. Previous owner added a tow hitch and that compartment gets opened up to add the harness.

Any recommendations on aftermarket nets?

Just curious the reason you want aftermarket vs the real thing? Probably one of the fastest ways to find out if there is an aftermarket version is to do a google/internet search using the correct 11 digit BMW part number for the flexnet.

You can order one from your local BMW dealerships parts department…or shop online. Just use the 11 digit BMW part number for the net which is #5 in the diagram below. This is the same info that was posted above in post #206.

This is an "envelope" cargo net that can be stretched across the rear of the vehicle so that you don't have to reach up into the vehicle to get items that could normally end up further up into the vehicle when driving around town. You put things inside the envelope that you don't want rolling around in the cargo area. I put my briefcase in the net daily. When I go to the store and have just a single bag or just a couple of bags...I put them in the envelope net. If I purchase something delicate like eggs or a container of milk/juice/etc...they go in the net. If I have something round like a melon or a basket ball...I put them in the net.

Thumbs up

I bought myself an approved low mileage 2018 F15 from a BMW main dealer a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to find an unused/sealed cargo net in the side pocket after I got it home.

I had been planning to buy a cargo net anyway, so this was a bit of a result.

Then I wondered if all X5s come with this and if everyone knows about it, so I Googled and found this thread.
