Drivetrain Malfunction. Drive Moderately. Maximum Drivetrain Output Not Available.
Last night, about a mile from my exit, I got an error message saying:
“Drivetrain Malfunction. Drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available. Consult Service Center.” That was an understatement; the vehicle would shudder if you gave it any more than a light throttle. And it idled very rough at the stoplight. It died three times as I tried to back into the garage. I called my dealer and then brought it in this morning - that was a rather suspenseful trip, but I made it in and they gave me the loaner. Anyone experience this and if so, what did it turn out to be? And I like this ride so much, I've kept it beyond my normal 1.5 to 2 years - and it's recently out of warranty. Ugh.

Yes, on my F30. Nothing special. Replaced a sensor chip then problem fixed. It is kind of common for F series.

This happened on my '12 e70. Tried to pass a truck on a two lane highway and when I tried to accelerate, car basically stopped and same error message came up. Dealer ended up replacing all 8 fuel injectors (still under warranty thank goodness).

Thanks guys, my research on the forum revealed a couple of things besides gas: fuel injector(s), PDM = power distribution module (I think), or an Air Intake Sensor.
The dealer just called and it's due spark plug replacement at $400+. They think there may be a leaking injector(s), and think any codes and inspection of the spark plugs will confirm. Bracing myself...

I've seen many issues with the drivetrain malfunciton on the 50i.
Here are a list of other owners with the same. Hope this helps. http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...in+Malfunction

Thanks Kzang. I didn't go back as far as you did. Particularly didn't like the one about the engine replacement (but there was no follow-up detail)!

That's exactly what had happened to my vehicle, SA mentioned something about the timing belt that is snapped and did some damages on the engine block.
BMW HQ requested the dealer to Install a brand new engine. Unfortunately my request for a work done report was denied and the reason was "BMW is paying the repairs". In regards to the newly installed engine their are no difference at all in way of performance or what so ever, 3k on the clock since the vehicle rolled out from the dealer, (actual odometer reading is 33K). And the error message I used to get frequently (every 2 to 4K on average) on the previous engine haven't popped up on idrive screen so far which is "topping up engine fluid" that mean this engine is upgraded in some way for sure. I hope you don't need to swap your engine since your vehicle is out of warranty "fingers crossed". |

I wonder if this is also an issue in the current generation X5/6Ms? It seems like it only happens in the 50is.

My dealer advises the issue is a leaking fuel injector for Cylinder #4.
The new Fuel Injector is $80 and Labor will be $285. Naturally, I hope this restores my X5 to what has been a strong motor without previous issues. And I'll leave an update when I get it back and have been able to drive it for a couple of days... Meanwhile, I'd appreciate any comments from those of you who know if a single fuel injector can go bad and I can otherwise anticipate smooth sailing? Or does this signal several other (or all) injectors will need replacement soon?

Hmm...not too expensive for a fuel injector.
I work with heavy diesel trucks and one troublesome fuel injector usually means other ones are bad too. Ours clog up rather than leak, so thats probably why they all fail after a while. We mostly have this problems on Scania engines, so it is a thing of engineering indeed. It's sad however that you had this failure on such a new car. My F15 is only six months old and Im already replacing Engine parts. During this time, I learned that taking out too much Power or reducing it's fuel consumption, usually comes at a cost of reliability. So while BMW prides itself with having super-efficent strong engines, here we are repairing them when they are almost new, regardless of diesels or gasoline ones, for things that hold up the whole lifetime of other cars. |

Had this message about 4 months into ownership on my 35d. Turned out to be a mechatronic replacement on the transmission (vehicle was still driveable). Parts were 3 weeks away, had to come from Germany.

I can tell you that X5s can get this error for a number of reasons. I believe the most common fix is a fuel injector replacement, however plenty of other members have had other issues leading to this.
For me, BMW thought that my blown intercooler had overheated and damaged some of the internal components on my 50i engine. Ended up having to get the entire engine replaced, after almost 5000mi on it now haven't had any issues. |

Agree. Would be nice if the error was a little more telling. I'm sure the detail stored in the background has the specific cause or code being thrown.

I got a call just a few minutes ago from my SA. His first words were "it's running like a top!" For anyone not familiar with that term, he thinks it's running great. Won't be able to see for myself until about this time tomorrow, but I trust him that it is. So it does appear to have been a leaking fuel injector for cylinder #4; cost will be $365 plus maybe tax on parts.

Glad it's resolved and won't cost you too much. But another great thread showing the importance of keeping these things under factory or extended warranty at all times.

this is generally a misfire and happens once in a long while, most of the time an engine restart cures it

I have 2015 x5 5.0 and had the same malfunction warning right after oil change service. The message went away after 24 hours...
Dealership wanted us to return to update the software / recall? The car has been in the shop for 2 days due to failed update. Unfortunately wife was chatting with SA so not 100% clear what's going on. Anyone else with similar issues? Thanks |

was happend on my '16 50i about a month ago.
based on the forum, details are vary. In my case, the BMW Service mentioned bad gas. since I always giving 91-octane gas, I am very frustrated.and It's not persuadable. Car was in service for about 1.5 week and they couldn't find any clue. The issue is gone now. I just hoping not happen again. |
