Took the M on a little road trip to escape Hurricane Irma

As Hurricane Irma was approaching Miami I was ready to evacuate and had a flight booked to NYC for Thursday morning. Wednesday afternoon I brought the M into an elevated parking garage to keep it safe.

As I was getting ready to leave on Thursday morning, American Airlines decided my evacuation idea seems way too easy, so they cancelled my flight due to crew availability. A big f.u. to AA for that. Time was not really on my side, so I decided to head back to the parking garage, pick up the M and drive the 1300 miles to NYC.

I was extremely concerned about fuel consumption during the fuel shortage in FL but the car has been performing nothing but amazing. Not a single issue on the entire trip. I was running low on oil so stopped at a dealer in Georgia to get it filled up.

I made it to NYC in 3 days with a stop in Savannah, GA and Washington, DC. Now the car is parked safely in a Manhattan parking garage for $800 per month

Hope everyone impacted by the hurricane is safe!

First and foremost, i'm glad you are safe and hope all family members are safe too.

Secondly, I wish I can say the same about my car's fuel consumption. It's burning too much fuel and i'm starting to worry that there might be an issue with the fuel pumps.

How new? My life to date is 18.1mpg at and average of 43mph. That was ~16mpg for the first 5k/miles. It's been steadily increasing since.

Welcome to NYC, you're going to notice a huge drop in mpg. I get 12-13mpg local driving with 16mpg to date and it's only a 35i lol

Thanks all!

Driving on the freeway at fairly constant speeds I was getting around 19-20mpg. City driving 10-12mpg.

I'm not really planning on driving the car around here. It's too much of a pain.

Can someone local recommend a place to get it cleaned? All those bugs need to come off...

Also if someone has suggestions for a shipping company, that would be much appreciated. I don't plan on driving the car back to Miami but rather have it put in an enclosed truck and sent back once the area has been cleared up.

The Parking garage next to Gracie square hospital by 76th and York will hand wash it for $30. I get both my x5m and turbo s washed there weekly. Good stuff.

I used Kelli Barton (B&K Transport - 903-239-3054) to ship my x5m enclosed from Ohio to Texas. She was very easy to work with and kept in touch. She's a broker but has a wide connection of trusted truckers she uses. My friend also used her to move his Porsche 356 with no issues. Just tell her Edwin with the X5m from Columbus OH referred you.

Montway.com does a great job of transporting cars, enclosed or open. I've used them many times. One advice I'd give is avoid working directly with a trucker, no matter how good the deal sounds. It was a nightmare for me when I tried that. Since then I always use montway.com (a broker) - the contracted transporter/trucker is obligated to perform the contract to the letter and has a huge stake to perform per agreement.
