Ok, so I think my car is sold so it's time to get something done. I have found a 2014 X5 xdrive50i with DHP for $44k. I know that I would get much more enjoyment out of the N63 than the N55 and from what I've read, the DHP is impressive. Thoughts?

I still don't understand why BMW decided to not bring M50d to states, while it's selling happily it's other diesel cars?

no demand here for that product. diesel is not selling very well here and Audi, BMW & MB have discontinued diesel and only current models within the BMW line-up have diesel options. once they are phased out there will not be new ones to replace them. the powers that be have spoken on our behalf and told us what we want. apparently it is electric.

Well, at least it will be less maintenance for our kids - at least some pros in going electric And maybe environment will be a bit cleaner (maybe)

With 20" wheel and M package suspension on the 35d then add a tune you are pretty close to replicating a M50d.

Probably fall of 2018 if there are no production delays for the new G05 X5 and G07 X7

there is a significant quality difference imo between the x5 and cayenne.

You are being short sighted if you do not cross shop between the 2. If I was stuck buying another suv hands down cayenne 100%. it is by far more luxurious, less truck like, and I think a better drive compared to my x550

as much griping about the 3rd row, it is still functional for mass kid transport which the cayenne cannot do.

The thing is I was cross shopping - Cayenne was my childhood dream so to speak (I wasn't exactly a child when they first appeared lol, but it was a epic car). However, we need to compare apples to apples: my 50i vs Turbo - sorry but Cayenne S will not cut it, not even close. So guess what? Cayenne Turbo 2014 with comparable mileage (21k miles) was $30k more expensive - ouch! My 14' 50i for $49k vs 14' Cayenne Turbo for $79k. I wish extra $30k was pennies for me, but unfortunately it's not and I would rather put that money towards my kids college lol. YMMV

Cross shopping ended for me right there

If you are not like me and performance doesn't matter to you and all you want is a Porsche badge or you can see yourself happily driving Cayenne S (or even Cayenne Base) - then I would agree, it makes sense to look and strongly consider Cayenne

the problem with the cayenne is the layout of the interior with a trajillion buttons everywhere. a button for every function and feature. not my cup of tea. I can't believe they built the first version then said "Needs more buttons" at a time when everyone else in the industry was going away from buttons:

Previous interior was just awful all around...

400hp in a Cayenne S wasn't considered?

I agree, the base and S do not have nearly the same characteristics of the N63 engine, but I wouldn't call it a slouch either. However, in a stick shift base Cayenne I enjoy driving the Cayenne much more than the 50 x5, and maybe this is manual transmission bias, but I would just reiterate that it is worth testing the base and S prior to pulling the trigger on a 50 just because it's faster. The X5M however is a different beast, but comparing apples to apples I would not ignore the S model.

This is our second X5. Had a 08 and now a 15. Albeit the 08 is better than the 15 in term of handling, i tihnk I will stay with the X5. Ive looked at the MB GL550, Q7, and XC90 and the XC90 is probably the closest replacement.

Id like to have a car with a third row hence the car mentioned above. My wife's lease is up end of next year so Im looking for a used X5 5.0 Msport with third row seating now... If I cant find that exact ones I want then I might go to the other brands.

I had a 2014 xDrive 35i luxury line that unfortunately had to be totaled due to an accident I was in. I had about 110,000 miles on it and I ended up getting a 2017 xDrive 35i M-Sport because I absolutely loved the X5. I do a lot of traveling, hence the 110,000 miles in 3 years... I was bummed about losing my first one, but I am extremely happy with the M-Sport as IMO they're great SUVs.

I have owned 7 X5s since the first generation, and I am on F15 #2 now. The X5 is the best, IMO, combo of SUV/car/wagon. Sports car like when wanted, and very practical and suburban when needed. Fits a guy as well as a woman, and just looks GOOD from every angle!!

HVAC could be much, much better on the current X5/X6, and some interior bits and bobs could be higher materials, but overall the X5 is just is a stand out great vehicle.

I have had 3 MLs (GLE), a GL550, 4 Range Rovers...and the X5 does everything right. I must say, that my 2014 full size Supercharged Range Rover was and still is the BEST SUV I have ever owned. Flawless!!! I miss that car.

Had the chance of participating the BMW UDE in NYC this week and got the chance of driving all the i-Performance back and forth. I can imagine that the new X5 next year will come with the similar Digital Instrument Cluster and central panel like 5-series. In the new 5, HUD seems brighter with the better layout. And, the digital instrument has more information. The current 40e has the old instrument cluster...

I live in The Netherlands where this year we had about 3 weeks of 30-33c heat and I found for the first 10 minutes the ac was weak. It does not seem to blow that cold on max in these first few minutes, but with only a few hot days a year not a drama, but if I was somewhere hot I would not like it. Conversely now it is going cold the heat comes on quick!

As to the question - I'll only change to the Oct 2019 F16 X6 if the exterior styling is a lot different otherwise it is too much money for something that looks the same.

I'm on my second, and probably not. Little things that shouldn't happen on a luxury suv are there.

Right now I have two BMWs in the garage. A 2015 535 that is very nicely spec'ed out with all the sport options checked and an individual interior with the best seats in the business. The second car is a 2017 M3 competition pack.

This is my third M3. (2008, 2015) Once you own an M3 and get used to driving an M3 you are pretty much hooked. I don't look at it like a race car, and the 0 to 60 times really don't matter.... but the impeccable handling, butter smooth drivetrain and personal car proportions packaged up perfectly as a 4 door sports sedan are just sublime.

So my point? When the 535 comes off lease next year I'm definitely going to get into an X5. It needs to be optioned properly (as do all BMW's) with the DHP and probably the 5.0. The X5 and an M3 will compliment each other nicely.

A word to the wise. There is another SUV that I have not seen mentioned in this thread. Best not to drive it unless you have some deep pockets. It is the Range Rover Sport. It looks beautiful, has a gorgeous interior, and in supercharged V8 guise drives beautifully. It is awesome. The problem is the price tag. The one I drove had a sticker of 132K and the lease was $1435/mo.

Having come from a Cayenne Turbo, I much prefer the overall “feel” and design of the X5.

I love the tailgate design, it’s incredibly versatile and efficient, couldn’t be better IMO

I'm also waiting to see what the new X7 will be like.
