Black trim discoloration
Hello fellas;
This is been happening for the past 2 years now and getting worse. It also happened on my previous BMW car that had black trim in about the same time frame. My suspicion is from snow/ice? Was planning to get it replaced under warranty as I did before. Any other suggestions? Thanks |

It's from car wash chemicals. Did you run your car through a touch less car wash?
I noticed the same staining on mine a few weeks after I got it, wasn't able to get the stains polished out. I notice it only on the X5/X6 which is strange. |

It's a chemical reaction from the soap or something you're using. There is nothing you can do other than getting it replaced under warranty, but the staining will come back. The trim BMW used is bad/cheap quality. Like I said the X5/X6 are the only ones I notice with that staining. I saw an X5 with the chrome trim and the staining was so bad it was a rainbow effect.
I run my Range Rover through touch less washes even though I know they use strong chemicals but never had an issue. I used to run my 640GC through the same one no issues. I hand wash my E63 and no staining. |

My X5M is too new but I didn't notice this on my X4 M40i's black trim. I had it coated with Opti-Gloss coat and my X5M is coated with Crystal Serum Light. I wonder if coating the trim would eliminate this issue?

easiest way to resolve this is to not let this happen in the first place... as the old saying goes... "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." that being said it appears it's a bit too late... depending on the severity of the speckling you can resolve it with any spray wax shortly after these imperfections surface however if they are baked on then a proper polish that is a minor abrasive will work wonders. afterward protect the paint with a proper wax and sealant.
