X5 35i msport muffler cut open

Hi guys I sold my stock muffler to a forum member and who is experimenting - thought I'd share the pic he sent me with the exhaust cut open.

Cool. Interesting. Looks like a lot of opportunity for cancellation. Sound waves can bounce all over the place.

This is what the welder and I came up with. With the 3" inlet, we made the air flow more toward the exit with the valve. we left the perforated section on the valve side so that I didn't overheat the valve gaskets causing them to deteriorate and rattle.

I haven't had a chance to take a video of the exhaust sound, but with the valve open, it sounds pretty much like the MPE. With the valve closed, it's very quiet. If I want the burble and the pop, I just use the BimmerLink app to keep the exhaust valve open.

This solves the issue of having a quiet car when the wife/ girlfriend is in the car and having a pretty nice sounding exhaust when the significant other is not in the car.

Thank you for selling me the stock exhaust.

While we had the exhaust off, I revved the car to see how loud the sound is, and it's not too loud.
So, when you asked me if you can make the exhaust louder, I think the only solution is a hi-flow catted downpipe or a catless downpipe...

I will try to get a video up within the next couple of days.

What we found out was that the exhaust is designed quite well...

The fiberglass packed section mutes the exhaust amazingly well and the chamber next to it acts as a resonator. It's quite amazing how much this whole setup mutes the sound of the exhaust noise.

The only way to get the burble and the pop was to pretty much straight pipe the exhaust with about a 2" circular cutout of the pipe where the original bend was.

If the car automatically closes the valve when it is at highway speeds and low rpm, there is absolutely no drone. If I use bimmerlink to force the valve open at all rpm, there is very slight droning at around 2k to 2.2k rpm

Very cool. Wouldn't the remote controlled cutout flaps that are so readily available have been easier and with similar effect? I'm very tempted to go that route on my 50i.

I have been trying to figure out how to keep the stock valve and settings while overriding them with something like the Macht Schnell Valve Control Module. I'm probably going to have to experiment with a homemade module like the ones that other forum members made using eBay parts for previous generation valve flaps.

The cost is quite low IMO... $450 is their price

Thanks! I have no storage space to keep OEM mufflers so this would be a great option.

What's the name of the code to control the valve on bimmerlink? Is it in expert mode?

It's not the Bimmercode App but the Bimmerlink App.

Bimmerlink App is used to clear fault and error codes. (Bimmercode App is used to code the car)
