2014 X5 engine oil leak- valve cover replacement

Hi,

I took my 2014 X5 for service today. The BMW dealer called and said there is a lot of engine oil leak and needs valve cover replacement, it's a fire hazard. They quoted $2200 (before tax). Is that reasonable? I have 100K miles..

In addition, I have rear breaks (I was getting brake lights on the dashboard) replacement cost $1160

So, Engine valve cover replacement costs $2200 and rear breaks with rotor $1160 - a reasonable cost ? Please let me know.

Thanks

First mistake is going to dealer. Find an independent bmw garage. Or if you do it yourself, you can do those repairs for a few hundred

I can do a few exterior things but changing the valve cover is something I don't want to take the risk of doing myself. Additionally, I don't have enough tools etc.

I thought about going to external BMW places but I don't know if they are trustworthy or will do a good job.
So, stuck with the dealer. I wanted to know if the dealer is overcharging...

Here is a diy you can watch.

I'd also change the oil filter housing gasket while you're at it.

I have same leakage on X5 35d. Not uncommon. So far I am waiting for an opportunity to fix it as it requires the injectors to be removed. It is a small leakage but overtime creates a mess.
Not sure who bad is the leakage on your case but asking myself ... if this is a fire hazard why BMW didnt issue a recall to fix it?
Looks like standard labor for this job ~ 5.6hrs @ $200 = $1,120 + $50 parts -> fair price would be ~ $1,200

I feel I am overcharged. About $1500 more than if I had done it elsewhere. Next time I will do more research and save some money...

I also have a valve cover leak on my 2017 X5 with 70K miles on it, is it really a fire hazard? I believe the dealer quoted me $1500.
