It doesn’t sound like there may be too much interest in this, but if there is, we can get a group-buy going of 10 minimum, we can get these for $309. Anyone intested, please let me know.

There is a multimedia HD Box($349) that connects to the back of the iDrive and between drive and the display and it has several inputs including 2 HDMI's the Apple TV connects to one of this.

The biggest problem with the CarPlay: no real integration with a car - no messages on the head-up display or dashboard.

Scott since our screens are not touch screens - are you able to control it via iDrive knob or steering wheel buttons or it's just screen mirroring to use Apple map etc? Can I just use Google maps? And the box itself requires to take off front panel to connect it to iDrive? I just have no experience at all with this.

for example, if you wanted to use Apple map. how would you input the destination address?
1. siri 2. type it on the phone 3. type it with the iDrive knob thanks [QUOTE=Scott2.0;23513373]You use the iDrive knob and can also change songs, answer calls and summon Siri with the steering wheel button. Install was kind of a bitch, but mostly because I did it in my 120 degree garage. Taking off the panels was easy. Here's a video they have of them doing it in a 5 series: |

Apple Car Play (unichip Box) BMW 525i M Sport Touring (E61)
Thought I'd share my Apple Carplay installation in my 2010 BMW 525i M Sport Touring. I bought the unit directly from the manufacturer (http://unichip-tec.com) and had it installed by Autogravity in Mt Eden, Auckland, New Zealand.
It works so well, you'd think it was a factory option. I couldn't be happier and the guys at Autogravity, they are awesome. It's pretty pricey but I think it's worth it if you need music, podcasts, google maps, waze, apple maps, hands free calling, global radio, spotify, Siri etc. It uses the standard screen so it's not touchscreen but uses the iDrive controller to navigate around the apps. The steering wheel controls work as do the buttons on the iDrive (Map, Tel). I'm using it with my iPhone XS Max running ios 12.0.1 Here's a video of it in operation:- |

Before iOS 12, I would have said CarPlay is useless. I'm driving a loaner wit CarPlay right now and I admit I'm going to miss this when I get my X5 back.
For $400-$500, I'd say that's not too bad. The BMW one is like $300, well $100/year now.\ From the videos this third-party solution looks even better than the BMW one since the BMW one you get only a 2/3 view.

I m in discussion with UniChip manufacturer to get boxes that provide the full CarPlay capabilities for give me take $300.
I also see some usb dongles that connect between your phone and the usb in console for less than $100. It provides also CarPlay. Not sure the differences in capabilities. That being said, I m still debating whether it is really a necessity or a nice to have since I see it everywhere .. |

Kinda annoying that I can't listen to radio and use Waze then. I listen to sports talk every moreninf on my way into work and this would ruin that ability if all my audio would have to come from the phone at that point. I guess I get why. Just think it kinda throws another wrench in it for me.

Seems like it. They ask you to install a third party app then CarPlay runs when you connect your phone.
I asked the seller to clarify if X5 f15 are supported |
