Heads Up Display and Polarized Sunglasses

Anyone else frustrated that you can't see the heads up display on our cars while wearing polarized sunglasses?

Nature of the beast... You are basically looking at a reflection. Polarized glasses reduce reflection, hence the issue. Buy a nice set of non-polarized

Funny you say this I noticed the exact problem this morning whilst driving into work.
I have turned the brightness up to maximum and I do get more of a ghost image on the windscreen which is readable.

Buy non-polarized for driving or just tilt your head occasionally...

This. You'll get used to the head tilt sooner or later if you don't want to buy non-polarized shades.

Yep, definitely frustrating. As noted above, I've gotten used to the "head tilt." Same bodes true with the radio display on my E82...with polarized shades on, its completely blank/dark.

I as the same problem. I just bought new sunglasses and made sure not to get them polarized for this reason alone. On the new glasses they did another type of anti-reflection, so it all worked out.

I do the same.. I've learned to just tilt my head to look at the information. Not a big deal to me.

Unfortunately polarized sunglasses reduces or eliminates horizontal glare which. If it worked to eliminate vertical glare there might not be this first world problem.

That's how the HUD works unfortunately... it works based on polarized light which is filtered out by your sunglasses.

I've come to the conclusion it is a function of the slant of the windshield and how near/far you are to the windshield. Driving home today in my 2014 535, i can see the HUD with my sunglasses (polarized) much better than on my 2016 X5. The windshield in the 535 is much more slanted than the X5, and I think (not actually measured this) that I sit a bit closer to the windshield as well.

Yes, in the X5 I do the head tilt, slide the glasses off thing. No need to do so in the 535.

And of course, they both work wonderfully at night, where the HUD really "shines" (pun intended).....

I think it's all in "the angle of the dangle"

I don't think that the HUD in my '15 F16 is as bad as my '12 E71 was. During the day, the F16 is white, but the E71 was always orange. When I tilt my head up a little, I can see it. I may be seeing it under the glasses though; I can't remember (my car is in the shop right now). That's a natural move for me though since I wear reading glasses and I do all kinds of things to prevent having to take off my glasses to see something else.

Is the HUD the only thing that is difficult to see in the F15 with polarized glasses? I'm looking at buying one and have polarized Oakley's. I can't see my E90's radio display, climate control a little, but the dash is fine.

You will have the same experience as your E90.

LCD displays use polarized glass.

I have found some polarized glasses work better than others with the BMW HUD....what I don't like or understand is why the Acadia we had before the F15 did not have this issue, it was dimmer slightly, but very visible. Only explanation I can think of is the Acadia has a phosphorus green and not full color.

I know, but my dash between the dials is LCD and I can see it just fine with my sunglasses. The climate control is darker, but I can see it. The radio display a few inches above the climate control (non-iDrive) is blank.

If I tilt my head, the info cluster goes blank, the climate control is brighter, and the radio is visable but dark.

So it just depends on what angle the polarization layer was applied.
