Just think of a traditional key...there is position 0(off), position 1 (electrical accessories), and position 2 (running position after you start the car). So when you push button off, you go from position 2 to 1. Push button a second time, you go from position 1 to 0 (off).

Why are you guys pushing the button twice?

Push it once which shuts down the engine and lock the car walk away....

Seriously, they're making this way too complicated. I didn't even know the 2 button press existed until this thread. I just press once, step out of the vehicle, press the handle or fob to lock the car and we're done.

I just leave the car running. It's easier.

The no button press feature. Seldom used, anxiety filled thrill ride.

Hahaha! I have actually done this in a torrential rain storm, I unintentionally left the car running in the grocery store parking lot for nearly an hour! Couldn't figure out why my tail lights wouldn't turn on when I was pressing my unlock button on the key fob as I was returning to my car with a cart full of soaking wet groceries, it was only then that I realized it was because my car was still running!

well when you have a sleeping baby in the car and you decide not to move the kid out of the car while you wait inside for your wife to run an errand...then that's when you would want to push the button twice...

At least that's my most common scenario for pushing it twice. Otherwise, if I'm just leaving the car, yes, push once and leave the car.

The car also shuts down after 10 minutes or so of pushing the button once to turn off the engine. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

correct, it does. But it's a $500 AGM battery back there...so better take care of it, and not run it excessively.

What? That's not what we are talking about in regards to the OP's question or concerns. We are talking about shutting off the car and why we need to press the button twice.

If you are going to chill and wait in the car after you have shut off the engine and need to be quiet, then by all means press the button as many times as you want.

But if I push it 3x, it starts car back up again! Advise!

I'm pretty certain in order for the car to start again you need to press the brakes. So in order to avoid restarting the engine, don't engage the brakes if you want to press the start button 10 times or more.....

Not unless someone disabled that through coding. Brakes not needed to start engine. Not a fan of that code.

Not if you keep your foot off the brake.

Incorrect, it's up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-high beam-horn-high beam-horn-start button.

Then you get infinite lives.

Yeah, but that's only if you have passenger.

If you have a passenger, you press the options button before the start button.

There is no select button in the X5, as far as I know. Options is the next best bet.
