You're going to need to tell people what style OEM wheels you're using, if you're even using OEM wheels, and whether you're also including spacers or not, and the size of spacers. Also, are you planning on lowering the car? So there's a lot of variables at play here that you need to put out there before people can give you specific answers.
Generally, if all you're changing is tire size and leaving suspension and spacer out, then wheel width is mostly going to dictate your max size and will be the bottleneck and then everything else beyond that would be your personal experience whether it rubs against your wheel well liner. (There's trial and error, just b/c it fits doesn't mean it won't rub, so you have to buy, install and then test and can get costly) I have not read many people go beyond OEM sizes especially on OEM 20s as its much harder to find tires beyond 315 and match the diameter with the upsized fronts. It's already hard enough finding 315 spec tires to begin with. Also, the flares won't matter and play into the technical aspects of fitment. Flares are there mostly for cosmetic and probably guard against some rock or road debris from kicking up and damaging your body work, but I imagine that's a minimal issue as they only stick out 1 inch on the rear fenders and for M Sports, they're color matched...so you're going to get chips on your flares which defeats the intentions of protecting paint. Basically, you have to decide if you like wheels that stick out with or without flares for aesthetics. Lastly, one question from me....why? You're not driving a 700HP 3200 lb Viper ACR and need to put maximum contact patch on for best braking grip and cornering at 1.5g. If anything, narrower tires will help fuel economy and offroad abilities. Is it for vanity purposes? (be honest) FYI, I own an M3 and upsized my tires (245/265 to 255/275), without tracking it, I cannot tell a difference. Maybe the turn in is a bit sharper due to lower sidewall, and maybe slight better load on hard turns, but that's about it....and after this experience, I would not pay up to upsize, you just cannot visually tell and you're paying a premium (in my case the PSS set costs close to $1500 for upsize). With 19s, M3's suspension and lower sidewall, I walk into work with my pelvis ground down to dust and a partially crushed skeleton from the poor roads that I drive on. (on my M3, to upsize, you need to lower your sidewall) On my X5, I'm just trying not to pay over $1000 for 315s....let alone try to upsize and all that... Lastly, if you're not even on wheels 20 or larger...then why? Upping wheel size is going to give you a better cosmetic upgrade than upping tire width.

If you're planning on sticking with OEM styles and sizes, why worry about the widest tire you can fit? Just stick with the 285/335 combo... like the current set of 21" 599Ms for sale right now in the classifieds.

Whatever you do, just make sure the rotating diameter are not far off than stock recommended size.

21" I believe it was 325/30-21 for the rear.

I'd prefer wider tires versus skinny ones. Because even the widest spacers can't help you here.

the profile on a 22 inch tire...it'll look funky with the ride height... IMO, 21 wheels are the thinnest tires I'm willing to accept membership on this forum at.
