Cool Do Not do this to your key fob

So the car came with a very used key fob. I thought it was a good Idea to buy an empty key fob from Amazon and switch it over, Easy right? WRONG.

These keys come super glued together. I mean together like naturally occurring in earth.

The idea was to swap out the chip from the old fob to the new one. I was very excited and though this was going to work.

I tried to break the black plastic part but instead I ended up ruining it.

Went to my local BMW parts place and ordered two new fobs and a blade.

Cost me more than 900 bucks!! OUCH

Guys this post is to show you my experience with this types of things. We all want to personalize and restore certain parts of our trucks to make it our own.

Here are the pics.....

Your local locksmith should be able to do this for about $200 each. Take a look around.

Sorry for your loss, but thank for poaching sow we know how to go about fixing this!

I did this as my wifes OEM fob was missing a button. The tolerances are not the same on these after market ones. It was a challenge for sure but I was able to frankenstein her fob. One of the buttons is a little tight/stiff but works. She hardly ever uses the buttons so all good. It's doable but not a project for the faint of heart. Some micro screw drivers and files are a must.

I went with a key fob shell like this. Made it a bit bigger but tolerable. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114029584833

if your fob is messed up, just get something like this to make it look nicer:

Are these keys ready to go once you take each one into car by rh side of steering column and push start button or did you have to get them programmed another way?

These "keys" are just plastic shells of what should be the keys. There is no need to program anything as you are taking your chip out of one shell and placing it into the other. That was not the case with me. The OEM key fobs are super glued together and doesn't not allow for an upgrade.

I am pretty sure you can take these keys apart, may be previous owner glued it all together? Since it was so beat up I won't be surprised.

Our OEM was not super glued, just several "snap" fittings along the edges. My guess someone tried to fix things and broke the snaps and was forced to glue it.

I actually just did this and had no issue. The secret is to look at the replacement t key and try to disassemble it the same peices.

The thing that sucked was that the oem key did not fit, so I had to go
Take a picture of the actual key that unlocks the door and have it cut for me. That cost $13 or so. Local locksmiths wanted 90
To just cut the blank!

One you get to the last part that is glued or melted together, I used an exacto knife to cut the seams u too I was able to pry with out damaging the board. The whole change out probably took 15 minutes.

Not a fan of that one. I got a genuine BMW key fob case on Amazon for $25, same color code as my interior. I found it by searching the bmw PN on amazon.
