Hello group. I’m wondering if anyone has had issues with DPF filter /catalyst after their EGR cooler has failed.
I have a 2015 35d with roughly 230000km. We use the vehicle as a commuter and our main vehicle. So usually longer trips. Any drive we take is over at minimum 6 miles so no short trips. A few years ago the x5 started using coolant. It ended up being the EGR that failed. They at first told us it tested fine then a few months later we blew holes through the manifold. BMW covered the repairs. All was good until we started using coolant again only to find out there was another recall for the EGR but the parts were unavailable. The EGR was again replaced. Only to keep getting engine codes. Again the manifold was damaged. All this was again repaired by BMW. Since the last EGR failing we have had DPF filter issues. At fist they said it was a failed sensor, this was replaced, then it’s a plugged DPF filter catalyst. All these issues are now at our costs since we are out of warranty. All the research I have found states that one of the main reasons for a failing DPF filter is coolant leaking. Engine code P0172 and P026D Let me know your thoughts. Thank you for your time. |

Well it sounds like car warranty or not warranty BMW original parts and labor are covered by 2 year warranty. There is a recall in US for the EGR cooler leaking and causing the manifold to melt as well (https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1891695) so if BMW replaced all the parts you mentioned and it still caused the DPF to fail I don't see why it would be coming out of your pocket since this issue was caused by faulty BMW part (which was replaced by BMW). I would say talk to your service advisor and see what dealership can do for you in this case.

Thank you for the response.
Yes that was my plan. I just wanted to see if anyone else has run into this issue with a failed DPF and what was the results if BMW stepped up etc. |

Don't believe P0172 and P026D are dpf related at all. Sounds like a leaky fuel injector to me.
I wouldn't trust bmw when it comes to dpf issues. They quoted 8k after egr cooler failed and dumped coolant though the system. I used ista+ to do a dpf pressure and they looked pretty good so I just forced a Regen, drove it for 1000 miles and all of the codes cleared |

You're out of warranty? I would look into deleting all the emissions stuff you can. EGR, DPF, SCR, DEF...remove all that and suddenly 95% of the issues with this engine disappear. Plus you get more HP/TQ and better MPG (if you so choose with your right foot).
