Throttle Blip on Downshift

Coming from several cars with either single clutch or dual clutch, how does the auto in the F85 handle the manual downshifts? Is there a nice blip of the throttle? i have always preferred to drive my previous cars in manual mode and enjoy the blips on downshift.

Mine goes into production soon.

Thanks!!

On d3 it definitely blips a little bit not as cool or extreme as you get on the dct. Would be curious what other people think. That's just my opinion.

I'm extremely impressed with the F85's transmission. When I heard that it didn't have DCT I was disappointed but, after driving it, I must say they really did a phenomenal job with the trans. Downshifts are quick and smooth, as are upshifts...with an accompanying "burp" or "fart" from the exhaust.

Yep, specially D3, love the downshifting during hard brake!

Just make sure to get the stupid ASD coded off so no fake exhaust noise is pumped into the cabin, and instead you're hearing the ACTUAL exhaust!

The auto transmission smoothly rev matches downshifts. I'm very impressed with it. More than that, there is no creep - the car only moves on throttle application. Like a proper dual clutch transmission!

They even got the console shifter orientation nailed. Just like the 991 GT3 (and any sequential race car), you pull towards you for upshifts.

I came from an F80 DCT. When the X5M is in Sport+ and Level3 Manual Shift, it is very snappy and great to use for engine braking. It's far better than any slush box autos I've driven, feels more like a DCT than an auto. Nice thing is it's not jerky like the F80 DCT at low speed.

I love slowing down to 35-40mph at a stop light and drop it into 2nd. That sound is addicting and it often scares the driver next to me.

Upshift at WOT is also very fun. It sounds like a .45 going off between 2nd and 3rd in Sport+.

I love it when people drive their cars as if they are musical instruments Can't wait to do the same.

catback GTHAUS exhaust on 50i has some extreme sounds... downshifts and engine braking are absolute joy. if i bring the rpms up around 2800-3200 or higher, modulating the throttle at 1%-5% brings excessive backfires and pops like a .45 as said before

just purchased a Nikon D5300 to play around with....i will see if i can get good footage this weekend.

the X5M was not available last October when some crazy bat decided to total my Audi S6 by running a Red(and their was no RS7 with the options i wanted) (will be my next car)

picked up my X5 for 87k OTD...

DHP
Msport suspension
Adaptive-(Air Rear)
these were critical to my purchase and the only way i would buy into an SUV...
Funny story, it was on the showroom floor when i showed up for a test drive, i stated that the only way you are getting me into an x5 is with all of the suspension options and 50i motor. they then proceeded to open the building glass sliders and move roughly 6 cars to get the X5 to the lot...and boy they must have been happy they did.

as it stands, it is as close to an X5M as i will get it....deciding now at 15k miles to either trade up to a x5m, sell my GTHAUS exhaust and get another for the X5M, or look for an RS7 or S8

I see you went from an F80 to the F85, I am currently deciding on the same thing, I currently have an F80 and looking at a fully loaded black F85.

What's your thoughts on your change and any feedback would be much appreciated?

I too was quite surprised by the X5M transmission. The blip on downshifts was incredibly addictive.

Interesting that you are considering the switch from the M3 slowie.

There have been a couple of threads from guys talking about this very subject.

I'd have loved to go with the M3 myself, but the X5M gives you that same feeling while remaining practical.

Keeping mine for 4-5 years (i'm planning to at least), then it'll be M3 for me and a basic SAV/SUV for the Mrs once my 1.5yo is older.

That is of course unless we add another kid in the meantime

I think this says more about the M3 than it does the X5M. M3 used to be visceral and analogue (chassis in the E46 and engine in the E92), now it scratches the nearly the same itch as the X5M; competent and brutally powerful, but without the incremental utility.

I currently have a 200 series Sahara Landcruiser as well as the M3, by getting an F85 I get both vehicles in one.

I dont go 4wd or offroad so need for such a truck like vehicle. Missus had a 428i which is also very nice.

I dont need 2 cars and thinking this might be a good option.

I just want to make sure the X5M has that all out grunt factor like the M3

Everything about the X5M is better than the F80 (acceleration, luxury, and comfort), unless you track your cars often. The X5M is very track capable, logging the same time (8m5s) as the E92 M3 on the Nurburgring. It also corners at .98g and stops from 60 in 105ft. However, you will burn through tires and brakes much faster due to the weight. I'm considering doing COTA this June.

At the end of the day, I do miss a RWD. I'm considering a 991 C2S added to my fleet for track weekends.

Oh, not much mod options compared to the M3.

Not many mod options might be a good thing... haha

Maybe Dinan stage 1 and exhaust ☺

More or less. They don't come standard with Nightvision/B&O, which is a good thing.

HK is good enough for me and I live up in the hills on acreage so dont need the night vision.

The black one im looking at has the full merino leather option which includes the Alcantara roof lining.

I can now confirm after a test drive that the throttle blip on downshift is intoxicating........!!!

Similar surroundings to M3 but seems much smoother and more luxurious.

Exhaust note through the tunnel was mad ☺
