Throttle Blip on Downshift
Coming from several cars with either single clutch or dual clutch, how does the auto in the F85 handle the manual downshifts? Is there a nice blip of the throttle? i have always preferred to drive my previous cars in manual mode and enjoy the blips on downshift.
Mine goes into production soon. Thanks!! |

I'm extremely impressed with the F85's transmission. When I heard that it didn't have DCT I was disappointed but, after driving it, I must say they really did a phenomenal job with the trans. Downshifts are quick and smooth, as are upshifts...with an accompanying "burp" or "fart" from the exhaust.

The auto transmission smoothly rev matches downshifts. I'm very impressed with it. More than that, there is no creep - the car only moves on throttle application. Like a proper dual clutch transmission!
They even got the console shifter orientation nailed. Just like the 991 GT3 (and any sequential race car), you pull towards you for upshifts. |

I came from an F80 DCT. When the X5M is in Sport+ and Level3 Manual Shift, it is very snappy and great to use for engine braking. It's far better than any slush box autos I've driven, feels more like a DCT than an auto. Nice thing is it's not jerky like the F80 DCT at low speed.
I love slowing down to 35-40mph at a stop light and drop it into 2nd. That sound is addicting and it often scares the driver next to me. Upshift at WOT is also very fun. It sounds like a .45 going off between 2nd and 3rd in Sport+.

catback GTHAUS exhaust on 50i has some extreme sounds... downshifts and engine braking are absolute joy. if i bring the rpms up around 2800-3200 or higher, modulating the throttle at 1%-5% brings excessive backfires and pops like a .45 as said before
just purchased a Nikon D5300 to play around with....i will see if i can get good footage this weekend.

picked up my X5 for 87k OTD... DHP Msport suspension Adaptive-(Air Rear) these were critical to my purchase and the only way i would buy into an SUV... Funny story, it was on the showroom floor when i showed up for a test drive, i stated that the only way you are getting me into an x5 is with all of the suspension options and 50i motor. they then proceeded to open the building glass sliders and move roughly 6 cars to get the X5 to the lot...and boy they must have been happy they did. as it stands, it is as close to an X5M as i will get it....deciding now at 15k miles to either trade up to a x5m, sell my GTHAUS exhaust and get another for the X5M, or look for an RS7 or S8

I too was quite surprised by the X5M transmission. The blip on downshifts was incredibly addictive.
Interesting that you are considering the switch from the M3 slowie. There have been a couple of threads from guys talking about this very subject. I'd have loved to go with the M3 myself, but the X5M gives you that same feeling while remaining practical. Keeping mine for 4-5 years (i'm planning to at least), then it'll be M3 for me and a basic SAV/SUV for the Mrs once my 1.5yo is older. That is of course unless we add another kid in the meantime |

I dont go 4wd or offroad so need for such a truck like vehicle. Missus had a 428i which is also very nice. I dont need 2 cars and thinking this might be a good option. I just want to make sure the X5M has that all out grunt factor like the M3 |

At the end of the day, I do miss a RWD. I'm considering a 991 C2S added to my fleet for track weekends. Oh, not much mod options compared to the M3.

HK is good enough for me and I live up in the hills on acreage so dont need the night vision.
The black one im looking at has the full merino leather option which includes the Alcantara roof lining. |

I can now confirm after a test drive that the throttle blip on downshift is intoxicating........!!!
Similar surroundings to M3 but seems much smoother and more luxurious. Exhaust note through the tunnel was mad ☺ |
