Spoiler removal

Meet the silver-haired fox. She has just arrived in VA from CA and it's time to get to work.

First order of business is to remove the spoilers. Would anyone be willing to provide some tips for doing this? I suspect I am going to need a heat gun...



Also, anyone in the NOVA area willing to shout out a good indy is appreciated!

The lower one (just above the X5) is double sided taped on. Just use some dental floss, slide between it and the car and work your way to end.

No experience on the top one, but I would say its the same. Just some double sided tape, so again dental floss.

Don't use a heat gun as you will likely ruin something ie. the paint or the factory spoiler. Just park the car in the sun, heat it up this way.

It's hard to see how the top spoiler is attached from the pics. I would tend to agree that it is probably double sided tape. I would use extreme caution if you do use a heat gun!! Good luck & congrats on a beautiful new ride!

Man, the price has gone up. I paid like $1650 for mine. And purchased PowerStop Carbon Ceramic Pads from a Porsche Panamera Turbo to fit these calipers.

Okay, so I was able to remove both spoilers today only to find they were installed by a bozo. There was some thin double sided tape around the edges, but on the body of both pieces there appears to be some industrial adhesive used to secure them.

Now that both pieces are removed (and for sale). I’ve got blobs of adhesive stuck all over the paint.

Any ideas on removing without needing a new paint job?

Nice work getting those removed, it looks way better even with the adhesive stuck to the paint. And... crappy mods like those are typically installed by 'bozos'

Can you get some floss or fishing line under the edge of the adhesive to get the bulk of it off? Otherwise maybe try a plastic pry tool, carefully obviously, to get the biggest portion of it off? Then maybe some Goo Gone or WD40 to remove the last of it? When de-badging/replacing badges, I've had good luck with both products just mentioned in getting the OEM adhesive off after the badging is removed, though not sure what type of adhesive this is.

Looks like it might be windshield urethane, does it feel like rubber? The only thing that is going to have a slim chance of working is a rubber eraser wheel, they go on a drill and they're meant to peel off double sided tape and stickers/emblems.

They are rubbery nuggets. I used a plastic pry tool earlier in the sun and was able to get them down on the roof to what’s in the picture.

I figure I’ll vynal wrap the roof and that back panel so the paint not so much an issue. However, I didn’t want potentially damage the pain on the trunk.

Edit: I also used the rubber eraser on the leftover double sided tape, but it had no effect on the adhesive.

Nothing will get off that polyurethane glue (Betalink/Sikaflex) minus using a razor/chisel and sanding wheel to level it. Sika flex makes a solution to remove but thats for before it fully cures.

3M sells adhesive removers which might be helpful, but your mileage may vary. If it's Betalink like jcm3 said, that stuff is strong and I'd plan on bringing it to a body shop for repaint.

Honestly, I don't think that adhesive is coming off without sanding, which will required to be reprimed and sprayed.

Got it off with a razor and rubber wheel. Not great but tolerable for now.

Thinking about wrapping the roof, but I might still have to smooth out the couple spots where the paint stripped off.

The trunk could possibly be smoothed out with some paint correction, but I think I’m going to need a new spray.

Your paint will require heavy compounding to get rid of those deep scratches, you're better off having those areas repainted. I would spend that money and have it painted. But congratulations on getting the adhesive off.
