Considering blacking out rims

Plastidip is easiest, quickest and cheapest and recent advances in formula make it very sturdy (unlike many years ago when it first appeared on market) and durable. My only problem with Plastidip is that I want gloss black and for some reason in person I never saw a good gloss black rims, they all are kinda grey-ish dark Even those that have metalizers and glossifiers applied on top. Sometimes you see random youtube videos showing freshly plastidipped rims look glossy, but I wonder if they become dull and grey-ish when dry?

Anyone has experience with this?

Probably will need top coat and clear coat over the plasti dip if you want that gloss look.

I believe the closest you'd get to gloss is satin which is in between gloss and matte. I'd just get them powder coated

I would not do plastidip, go with Autoflex high gloss Aerosol. You will not believe how glossy it would look and having recently experienced this with the whole car body I can vouch it is insanely glossy. Btw, I myself am getting the wheels blacked out very soon.

Thanks guys! I spent my allowance and even more than that for now (don't tell my wife) and cost is limiting factor right now for me. I'm going to check how much it'll cost to do Autoflex locally and powder coating to compare.

Oh shoot, after watching that Autoflex video - just realized Autoflex released it in aerosol cans! That may be the answer for me. I thought Autoflex was only available for spray guns since it's positioned as a Professional product (compared to plastidip) - like hdAge did with his x5, but it seems they are offering it in cans now too!

The only downside is that I don't have garage and they require clean environment for 24h to dry

Hey thanks man! How do you feel about Autoflex? It's a Pro line. If you check hdAge thread - he did his x5 and result is so good: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...1438194&page=2

Powdercoat or have them painted by a shop... It will look the best otherwise just buy the OEM wheels that come from the factory in black and have the other set as your Autumn/Winter set.

Which wheels do you have again? Either way, and with all due respect, rattle canning your stock OEM wheels black is such a 101 mod.

My old car with Glossifier. As you can see, not very glossy.

I only had them dipped for a few weeks to see how it looked. I later got them powder coated.

Did you do plasti dip or autoflex? there is a noticeable difference between these two products.

Most people dont know about autoflex including many of the plasti dip dealers. And surprisingly enough even the ones that know about autoflex, some believe it is not going to be as good as OEM paint. When I was shopping for a autoflex dealer I spoke to one dealer and told him that I'm looking for nothing less than a OEM finish, then he said autoflex will not do the job. Well fast forward now and you can see the finish, a properly done autoflex job can be atleast as good as OEM and in my case it looks and feels better than my previous OEM paint.

Ofcourse I still haven't blacked out the wheels yet, but I'm sure it will be as good as powder coating or better. Best part is you can peel it off anytime and go back to your OEM finish.

It was regular plastidip. I've a bunch of autoflex videos. Looks just as good as real paint.

Yes autoflex is the way to go, as mentioned earlier if done properly it looks and feels better than OEM. Unfortunately plastidip is not resistant to weather, gasoline etc.
