X5 diesel auto start stop

Anyone have experience with the A-S-S on the diesel model? I'm wary of using it as I'm concerned about short cycles on the diesel.

However, there is one or two long traffic signals on my commute, and if I just miss it, I'd like to enable A-S-S and let the engine turn off during the red phase...

Any thoughts?

It's completely OK. I even turn sport mode off at traffic lights to let the engine die for a minute. I used to own a V8 gasoline F15 before migrating to a diesel, it was OK there too. Not much of a difference alltogether.

I share your diesel concerns (I own a 35d as well) and turned my start/stop off. I know that, in Europe, city cycles are not the greatest for diesels. Mind you, advancements in technology may have resolved most issues. Nevertheless, I'd rather err on the side of caution; the diesel drivetrain is economical enough for me without this feature.

I think the ECU does a decent job managing the engine on that front, the ASS doesn’t activate until the car is warmed up enough and not at all when it’s really cold outside. I drive in sport a decent amount for performance reasons but also drop it into comfort to let the ASS work at stop lights when it’s not below freezing.

It's pretty warm here so I'm not worried about the temp. Typically the oil temp needle needle moves before I'm even out of the driveway.

I'd rather pay for 1 litre more than for a new battery or starter motor.

I usually use it when I have to wait more then 3-4 mins ie train crossing, waiting in a drive thru, long dead stop traffic jam.
