What is max USB drive size in iDrive?

Has anyone used 64GB or 128GB USB 2.0 on their new F15's iDrive?

Are you sure about the HD? It specifically says that we should not do so in the manual.

I guess solid HDD consume more power and thats the problem? What about SSD disks?

There is no such thing as a 1TB USB flash drive yet . I would format your Hard Drive to Fat32 and see if that helps. Of course remove all of those files onto your computer first since formatting erases everything.

I am not sure, but i guess there might be a power issue as well. BMW says not to use usb hard drives/flashlights, etc. cause the port cant provide the needed power. A usb flash disk or an ssd hard drive should work, cause they dont consume a lot (i think an ssd take 1.2V-1.8V when writing and less when reading). But when you connect sth that requires more power, it might not work properly( btw you should be able to hear a ticking sound coming from the hard drive if it does not get enough power).

I found this, while doing my research:

Information on connection

► The connected audio device is supplied with a max. power of 500 mA if supported by the device. Therefore, do not additionally connect the device to a socket in the vehicle; otherwise, playback may be compromised.
► Do not use force when plugging the connector into the USB interface.
► Do not connect devices such as fans or lamps to the USB audio interface.
► Do not connect USB hard drives.
► Do not use the USB audio interface to recharge external devices.

Yes, that is the other reason. It is never recommended to charge/power a device that requires 1amp (1000 mA) or higher to charge with something that has an output as low as 500mA or less.

You don't use a 1.5-2.0A cigarette lighter to micro-usb? That's safer for your S3 and faster. It will only pull its max input from it anyway.

Using Kingston DataTraveler Mini 3.0 64 GB together with an AmazonBasics Hub USB 3.0 4 port hub with no problems. Not sure if USB 3.0 is needed...

So, basically, the USB port can provide up to 500mA of electric power. Given that and the standard voltage of a USB port, which is 5V, the port should be able to handle devices with power consumption up to 2.5W.

That means that most SSD disks should be supported, as during reading they consume less:

Hope that helps
