Tested the RaceChip vs BMS today on 50i

Same X5, same road, etc.

All runs were much quicker than "normal" since it is 54F high Baro and very dry air. My normal 60 is 4.3 and 1/8th is 8.2 at 87mph.

Vbox for all 3 tests.

Email RC for 93octane setting: S1=1 S2=B
Email BMS for 93octane setting: 1:00 both modules.

Only tested those settings.

I am not making any conclusions about either chip. This is just what happened after a 15 minute same route driving part and full throttle to let each one "set" the fuel trims.

Your results may vary.

I am keeping the BMS to test on "normal" days to compare to the 4.3's later on.

Baseline pass before any chips:

One thing I noticed with RC is that it took a few miles of driving for the car to adjust to the tune for optimal results.

Plus the RC strategy is more sophisticated for the 35 vs the 50. 50 is just map sensors.

Checking over the log files, RC did not increase the airflow at all. The maf should show an increase if the boost is altered by the map sensors. Can Not read a boost increase with RC since it tricks the map sensors, but the maf reading is accurate since it is what it is. Total maf peak before RC was 44b/min which is right at 450 engine hp. Total maf peak after RC was 44b/min.

Flip side is the BMS tricks the maf sensor so you can not log an increase in that sensor.

But you can read the map sensors for a boost measurement since they are not tricked. 1:00 setting did increase the boost 1.5 psi to 17.5psi......that shows some promise for future increases.

BTW, both chips drove well at part throttle, etc....could not really tell they were on. Very happy with that.

I give you a lot of credit. You have to be doing this for the love of your cars and real life numbers. It appears you might be buying these parts just for testing?
If this was the f30 forum or a mustang forum your thread would have had tons of replies and thumbs up but you post anyway to get the info out there. I'm glad you do. Keep up the good work

Thanks for taking the time to test these and the filters as well in your other post. I'm not a plug a computer into my car and check codes, delete codes kind of guy. Do you think one chip is better suited for just getting it installed and not having to worry about it? I know a lot has to do with the settings you set the chip at but I'm not looking to push that either.

I wish BMW would just make an MPPK for the 50i

I don't sell the Tunes. Ben is the guy for that.

The jury is still out on the install and forget it chip. If I had to choose tonight it would be BMS hands down since you can install/remove it in 5 minutes. Race chip took me 50 minutes taking my time. Not hard at all but not 5 minutes either.

I'm with you. MPPK would be awesome !

@BayX5 , you won't regret just by adding the piggyback.
It is less headache then a real tune. Of course it will not bring you up to be no 1 racer, but it will brings up the fun of entering the freeway ramp.

You think they'll come out with an MPPK? The head of service at my dealer says it's been brought up internally since the MPPK for the 35i has been so popular. And by piggyback you mean the BMS?

Just in case anyone is wondering...

I know that the Racechip install for the 50i is different and it is more difficult, but for the 35i Racechip installation is literally about 5 minutes as well.

I can't say for sure but I doubt that BMW would make the MPPK for the 50i because then the performance aspect would close the gap between the X5M.
Piggyback is referred to as plug n play tunes like BMS, Racechip etc.

I hope so but doubt it. The 50 is very close to the X5M in measured acceleration. MPPK would put it equal. Marketing group would howl.

Big $ maker for BMW if they did though. 50 is 16psi. X5M is 22psi. Make MPPK 19psi and it would sell all day long. And they already have the tune. Quick cash. Need a MPE for the 50 also.

Props for doing all this work and having all the proof to back it up.

When i had the BMS stage 1 for my N64tu set to the 12'oclk position I had my 550 dynoed before and afterwards. It was only good for about 20-25whp gain on the dyno. Torque was a little more but not nearly as much as I thought it would be. The install was a breeze though and its pretty much the same time it takes for a 35i to do the Racechip.

I suspect if you cranked the Racechip up to S2 = C (one notch higher from default) it would equal what the bms is giving you.

I was never happy with the bms tunes because their hardware looked flimsy ($10 part controlling a 70K+ engine) and the power delivery was very on/off feeling. It happens gradually so you might not notice it right away but after running the tune for a bit then removing it going back to stock you really notice just how much smoother power delivery is without it. Maybe things have changed since....
