Wheels corroding - mainly around center caps

Hey Guys,

I'm in the midst of chasing BMW on warranty for corrosion on my 469M's. I haven't had the chance to upload photos, but just wondering if any of you have or are experiencing the same issue? The clear coat around the center caps is corroding on all four wheels, some worse than others. I'll keep you posted on the response from BMW Canada on my warranty claim. Definitely frustrating that I'm seeing this happen, the vehicle isn't even 2 years old yet.

The wife and I bought 2016 models in late Dec. 2015. Both showed a rust-like ring around the center caps within two weeks from taking delivery (both cars, so all eight wheels). It wipes off easily, but seems to reappear a day or so after a trip to the touchless wash. My theory is that the jets from the wash are forcing water around the caps (they aren't sealed very well) which causes a little corrosion behind them, and the rusty water eventually drains (or spins) out. I assume that BMW knows about this and all they would do would be to wipe it off. To truly fix, they would need to use caps that completely sealed, or coat the rim behind the cap so that it never rusts.

Anyone have any experience with a dealership addressing this? If so, how did they address it?

Might be the same issue people have experience with calipers rusting. There must be some steel behind the wheel that is rusting.

There is a copper colored anti-seize compound on the wheel hubs - could it be that?

This is definitely not rust, or marks that will wipe or polish away. The issue noted above could be the hubs themselves, as they are raw/un-coated steel and are always 'rusty'. Image hosting sites are blocked through our firewall at work...otherwise I'd share photos.

common. not covered under warranty. it is from the hubs and works it's way out. eventually the chrome finish around your center cap will start pitting and peeling.

sometime the tire change places use an improper sized cone to clamp the rim for balancing, and it ends up pushing against the lip of the bore where the cap sits. this can scratch or damage the wheel coating, which leads to corrosion.

That's exactly what ours look like (though ours aren't quiet that bad). If we could seal around the caps, I think it would stop.

Good luck, I hope this gets resolved. It may be "common" but definitely not OK.

Updates...just got back from my meeting at my dealer. They've documented everything with photos (of their own) and will be submitting for warranty replacement. I should know within a few days.

There is a product called "Fluid Film" that prevents corrosion on all types of metal. If/when you get your situation settled, coat the center bore and backside of the center cap with Fluid Film before while reinstalling. It should prevent future rust seepage from the rotors/hubs through that area and keep your issue from returning. Reapply as necessary...

Nice man, thanks for the tip! We actually use that product as a protectant on our CAT equipment before we ship from factory.

Exactly. Fluid Film is great for anything that can rust or corrode. A lot of guys on the Ford forums I'm on for my truck keep much of their undercarriage coated in it.

Updates guys. Wheels will be back from local re-finisher today, completely refinished under warranty. I did new rubber at the same time, went with the Conti DWS06. Keep you posted on my feedback with the tires.

Tires ride and feel great, slightly softer than the RFT's...but no 'squishy' by any means. Very happy so far. I've been driving fairly spirited, and they perform well.

Same idea on mine, like a white clouding / pitting, from the center outwards. I pushed for full replacement, but they wouldn't go for it.

this was one of the wheels on my 2015 x3 msport, had the same issue on the rest of the wheels.

last year when i address the issue to 2 service advisors, they walked outside and took pictures of the wheels. It took probably a month and all 4 wheels were replace under warranty.
