Poeple with gloss black wheels, how is the finish holding up?

I am in the market for gloss black wheels, mainly the BMW Cold Weather Package Style 491 with Pirelli Ice Snows.

I know that rocks, pebbles, and winter does not like staggered or concave wheels. The Style 491 is plenty staggered and with its gloss black finish I am not sure if this is a good investment overall.

Anyone have experience with 491's or 469's or any OEM gloss black wheels durability against daily driving use? Thanks!

I have the 491s and they're holding up pretty well. No signs of wear/damange other than curb rashes.

I have 469s and they are great. Just stay away from curbs...

Why does winter not like concave wheels? I run dark winter wheels cause it’s winter and I don’t really care what they look like. Very hard to keep any wheel clean in Calgary winters. I don’t have issues with the finish.

My friend has an S5 with those turbine style wheels and his rear wheel is pelted with rock chips so I would assume the rear wheels will get its share of chips and blemishes from daily driving.

Car is less than 3 months old. 2 rock chips in my wheel. i'm pissed. NOT CURB RASH, actual chips in the coating from rocks.

doubt warranty would cover, but its all on the same wheel too. All other wheels are fine.

i have to imagine gloss black wheels would look like they were washed with brillo pads if you use an automated car wash and the brushes clean the wheels. if at all possible in your area have the wheels coated and protected to mitigate swirls and scratches.

Yah, they'll take a beating in automatic washes. I had a set of gloss black wheels on my JGC that I ran through automatic washes all the time. They definitely took a beating from the brushes but were surprisingly revived pretty easily with a hand polish once a year. I should have just had them coated but really didn't care too much about those wheels.

OP, I'm assuming they are winter wheels only? If so, what's the major concern if they get dinged up a little? Over time it's going to happen with any wheels. The nice thing about black wheels though is a touch up pen does a really good job of filling in any chips and isn't noticeable from a couple feet away.

I hope no one on a BMW enthusiast forum takes their car through an automatic brush wash

I do from time to time in winter because there is more damage to be had from leaving salt and grime on it than an automated tunnel wash will create.

Whhhaaa another Calgary guy?! Hey buddy! I have the 491s and other than the previous owner curbing them a bit, they still look great.

I'm hoping in the spring, I can get BMW to refinish my wheels under the wheel and tire warranty I bought ...

That will be interesting to see what they do with that warranty. I think it is a money grab on the dealers part. I run 18” bmw winters on the x5 that are silver they have held up well over two winters.

I have black winter rims on my truck that I don’t have any issues with the finish.

But there are a lot of Calgary m owners on Bimmerpost.

Does BMW actually powder coat the rims black or it's just painted?
