Brakes Question

Have a 2015 X5 35i x-drive. It states front brake pads need changing in 3500 miles and the rears in 9000 miles.

1. Do I need to replace pads as well as rotors?
2. How long do rotors normally last?
3. Any certain brake pads/rotors you guys recommend other than OEM?
4. Are the front and rear pads the same? Or are they different?

Thank you!

Rotors usually last 2 sets of brake pads. Front brakes are always bigger than rear, so different.

Thank you, so looks like I just need brake pads then (65k miles on car). First time replacing.

I would do rotors and pads if you have 65k. It’s not that much more for rotors than just having them turned.

My rears wore out around 37k but front were still good

Rotors can be turned? So I don't need new rotors (other than having them turned, since this is first time for these brakes)?

Have you measured the actual thickness remaining on your pads?
Don't rely on the recommendations shown on iDrive as they are only a calculation based on what the iDrive thinks should be left.

It's not calculation, it is a sensor that wears out with the pads.

Funny idea with turning the rotors...

You never want to just put new pads on without wait get turning the rotors to give a new flat surface or replace them with new rotora. It all depends on the thickness of what material is left on the rotor.

Mate, with OEM pads and rotors, it us impossible to wear out the rotors before the 2nd set of pads it's finished. That's the design material strength.

If the wear on the rotor is uneven, there is a problem with the caliper.

I'm not a fan of the oem pads. Way too much dust. I like the Akebono Euro pads. I had them in my E70 and Merc before that. I just got my F15 and they put new brakes all around. Already ordered my Akebono pads to swap them out.

On my 2015 it was a calculation, service measured and enterd new values, extended brake life for another 20,000km

Does using non OEM brake pads and having them changed at a non BMW garage invalidate the BMW warranty during the first three years?
