Remote Start?
Anyone know if there is any way to get a remote start for the F15? I live in VT and having the vehicle warmed up before I leave the office is a must.
Any insight and thoughts are appreciated! |

If i were you I would never touch a BMW to install any aftermarket device mainly the ones that deal with anything electrical. Many things can go wrong. I live in MN and although I would love to have a remote start I never had one installed in my X5. There has been a lot of discussions why that is not an option from BMW and it is related to laws in Germany about leaving cars with engine on while idle as well as it goes against the Efficient Dynamics of BMW to save gas. Leaving a car with the engine running idle is a waste of gas.

Interestingly there's discussion of this option (both programmable via iDrive and with a fancy radio remote) in the US owner's manual.
So - it must be a factory option at some point (I say some point, as the same manual also talks about Congestion Assist, which we believe is no longer coming to the US market) |

The way that I've read this is that (German most specifically) carmakers believe that an engine should not idle to warm-up. They believe that this is bad for an engine. They believe that you should start up the cold engine and drive the car away.
My guess is that american (and Japanese) carmakers disregard this concern in favor of offering a remote start, simply because people want this. Our 2012 Honda Odyssey has a remote start and I use it, knowing (or believing) that it is not such a good thing for my engine.

I always thought/was told it was the opposite, bad for the engine to run without at least a brief warm up. Not necessarily long enough to warm the interior to a cozy 70 degrees lol, but not an ice cold start.

Found this on an older post in another forum giving 2 reasons why you cannot get a remote start from BMW: "First reason: The car is German and in Germany, it is illegal to idle a vehicle for longer than 20 seconds and unattended for any time at all. Second reason: Remote start is by definition "inefficient." If flys in the face of "BMW Efficient Dynamics" which is about saving fuel, so no provision is made for remote start."

I do not believe the car needs to be warmed up.
However, I heard that ideally the turbos need warming up and cooling down for the first few and last few km/miles, before driving hard. |

^ Page 67 of the manual "Do not wait for the engine to warm-up while the vehicle remains stationary. Start driving at moderate engine speeds."
As for warming up your vehicle being a "must"... I live in Edmonton, Alberta and I don't find this to be a huge problem. Most cars are reasonably warm in 5 minutes plus you dress for the weather! Being a little dramatic maybe? |

Hi Guys
Isn't what you require the "Auxiliary Heating with Remote" Option? I understand that this option gives you the ability to remotely pre-heat the X5 either via a remote control/App or a set timed value. |

A plug in heater is the way to go up north. However, in colder climates, pistons warm much faster than the engine block, cams and valve train. With the turbos sitting on top, it may help offset this some. Granted there would be a big difference in comparing living in Florida and Minnesota in the winter. Don't know why anyone would think its better to crank it and haul with a cold engine. Maybe this is another, "don't waste the fuel bit" from BMW. I think this may rank up there with their 15K mile BS oil change intervals with their 2013 service plan.

Pre-heat what? How? Where would the heat come from?
