Winter Shoes Are On

Was preparing to head up to the mountain for some snow tubing fun so put the winter wheels/tires on yesterday, just in time for an unexpected (and short-lived) valley-floor snow/ice event. Probably received only two inches, but that was enough to have people sliding all over the place. I actually avoided someone in an E-Class with A/S Contis from sliding into me because they couldn't make it up a small hill in our neighborhood and started sliding.
As things got colder and packed, I saw more and more abandoned cars.

The X5 is a beast in the snow with proper winter tires. I had zero traction issues and when I intentionally broke it loose, it was super easy to reign it back in. My setup isn't the prettiest, but remember that I don't run them the entire season. I just swap when needed and put the stock setup back on after a couple weeks.
Wheels - 18x8.5 +37mm Sport Edition wheels
Tires - 255/55/18 Blizzaks

Excellent! Nothing beats the feeling of confidence when you are faced driving in a winter storm. I finally put on my snow tires on my stock 469M's this weekend. Perfect timing since today's temps feels like its in the single digits when you factor in the wind chill.

This is why even if I had snow tires, I would avoid driving out in the snow.
You may be in control of your car, but others driving out there without proper tires is an accident waiting to happen when they lose control and slam into you.

^^ That's always my worry too! Nothing worse than the few seconds before someone slams into you, and all you can do is watch it happen.

It has happened to me.. I was driving fine on a 3 lane road with my all seasons on a slushy commute and then ahead of me there was a bend. 2 cars next to me took the turn faster than they should have and both lost control, started to spin around... I pumped the brakes to slow down and got out of the way.. both cars slammed into each other and hit another car on the other side of upcoming traffic. I have no idea what tires the other two cars were riding on, I would assume that they are most likely an A/S tires since the cars were a Corolla and Altima which aren't usually fitted with summer tires.

Agreed, but the key is to stay alert and always give yourself an "out". People freak out in these parts when it snows, so most stay in, which makes things easier for me.

Doesn't matter what the conditions are outside, bad divers are everywhere. I don't know why but more of them come out when it snows.

Winter tires provide better leverage to help you stay away/avoid them.

Yes, no one is out today. Everything is closed down.

Excellent! I'll soon consider my winter wheels set-ups this year...I run my 469M summer tires last winter and bought a snow chains and went to Mt. bachelor. I feel not very confident with the chain on summer tires and it also need to put on and put off frequently during the way ...

Two weeks ago, this car on the road flipped out when it downpoured like crazy. Slammed the brakes in front of me and started swerving all over the place. Fortunately I was paying attention so I avoided, but two other cars were not so lucky.

Driving in winter requires some skill but having a car like the X5 and WINTER TIRES makes it so much easier. For me, all season tires don't cut it.

What size winter tires do you have? Can you post photos?

I'm awaiting delivery and considering buying another set of 469Ms for a winter setup.

Tis the season. I was just at my mechanic's yesterday ordering a set of winters for my son's M235 X Drive.

With the X5 I stayed with the staggered 20" setup with Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow RFT's. Thought these were great in all aspects of handling, comfort and dealing with all the elements. It's a pretty heavy truck so I think the X5 does well as is.

I had ordered these a couple of months before the winter hit. Suggest making a decision quickly as these were really tough to find last year.

Have the opportunity to get OE 468M w/ Pirelli Scorpions for about $4400 here in Germany. Thoughts?

No, these are Replica's in gloss black of the 468M. The entire setup (tires / rims) last year all in (install, balance, tax and storage) I think was about $3,600. If I remember correctly the rims were about $1,100 for the 20" staggered and tires around $2,500. BTW, the rims were manufactured by DAI in Quebec. If interested PM me and I can hook you up with my guy. The Pirelli RFT's were tough to find last year so don't leave it too long.

The rim below was added to the list this year. I'd do it but I just bought my son his Nokian R2's today for his M235. That cost me $1,350.

That's a good deal especially OEM 468M. In Canada we would add another $2K to that price.

I'm jealous they sent you to Texas. Hood or Bliss, assuming you're Army? Hood does get snow every once in awhile.

Nope. Air Force. Down in San Antonio. I like the countryside of hood better though. I'm not used to all the bugs down here. Have to wash the car weekly.

It must be tough to maneuver through snow and rain. I've done heavy rain before but snow must be terrifying! Here in SoCal we get neither (except the mountains for the former) so driving is "easier," but not really when you factor in some careless drivers sprinkled here and there on the road. But anyway, I'm deviating form the topic of the thread.

Yes I agree, not the prettiest set-up but safety always comes first. Stay warm and safe! Please post pics of any trips you take with your winter set up. I like the scenery of the second photo; that's seriously beautiful scenery.
