I drive a $80,000 GL450 with plastic seats that gets 16mpg and there is nothing vaguely interesting about the driving experience. I would rather get 28mpg and save money for extra tires for the track car. I just don't understand soaking six figures into a SUV. |

So, at best, the most optimistic examples might break even in five years. As I said, doesn't make financial sense. Most people who can afford new cars of this sort don't keep cars for more than five years anyway, and if they do, what condition is the battery in at that point? Hybrids are an emotional, feel good purchase, which is fine as long as it's recognized as such. Most of us purchase based on what makes us feel good, otherwise we would all be in identical little white appliance cars. It just amuses me how much people fool themselves into justifying hybrids as an intelligent purchase, then try to convince the rest of us. New technologies are evolving, R and D is advancing the tech forward, slowly, and it will probably get there in the foreseeable future, but it's not quite there yet.

Overpriced. Another car that was overpriced especially considering the same engine choices as previous generation. Shame....

Sure. Based on my math the spread between a Cayenne GTS and the new x5 5.0 (guessed price with options) the spread is 5-10k maximum. That smaller spread combined with BMW's constant softening of their cars will lead people like me to consider the Porsche instead. Unless you are leasing, the Porsche will appeal to a person who buys the car for performance. BMW is becoming more and more like Mercedes...

Yes, I have, and I bought one. It's not all that much more expensive than a well equipped X5 35d is, and that's more or less apples to apples. Difference is less than $10k.

50i vs a GTS is a close comparison but your still talking 10% higher vehicle price. And when you look at the 35 with the same options as a Cayenne your talking 15%+ more expensive and correct me if I'm wrong but your paying for service too. I think the prices are getting crazy but people that are going Porsche are not doing it because its a better deal. |

Wow. I'm really surprised at the greed of BMW. One of my biggest peeves about 2013 pricing was that they severely limited your choice of options artificially if you went with the base $47k model. You had to jump to the $56k premium model to gain access to the other option. Now they have taken it further and eliminated the base $47k to boost their average selling price. I really hope they fall flat on their face and the x5 doesn't sell well.
I'm going to have to see what the pricing comes out to with the options I want. I already suspect it's going to come out a lot higher than the 2013 model. If so, then I'm going to have to look into other options besides the X5. To compare the 2013 and 2014 pricing, I think you have to compare the 2013 $56k premium with the 2014 $56k awd base. For reference, here's the difference in included options: 2013: premium trim Nevada leather, wood trim Park distance control Panoramic moonroof Front heated seats Automatic tailgate Memory for steering wheel and outside mirrors 4way lumbar support 19" vs 18" wheels Power adjustable steering column Ambiance lighting Auto dimming rear view / power folding mirrors Privacy glass in rear windows Navigation is offered as an option for $1900 2014 base awd Navigation BMW apps BMW assist Updated power steering Automatic start / stop Right off the bat, it looks like the 2014 included options pale in comparison to the 2013 included options. This is not looking good for me ..... |
