How to remove tailgate trim?

Hi all!

The lock actuator (part # bmw 51 24 7 269 543) gave out on our 2015 X5. To replace this, I need to remove part #bmw 51497294791. This is the rear tailgate plastic trim piece that the handle attaches to (#14 in image).

Any help is greatly appreciate! thank you!

Just a tip in regards to the part database illustrations...the encircled numbers always refer to hardware (screws/bolts/nuts/fasteners/etc). So the part you’re referring to would actually be #13.

Undo the 5 screws that hold the inside panel #9. Remove the release handle. Then lift it and peak inside - you'll see how #13 attaches to it with several tabs. Undo them one by one starting with the outside ones, to separate 13 from 9. Then pull 13 hard - there're 2 clips attaching it to the tailgate.

When assembling back, spray silicon and/or put felt tape along the edges to reduce squeaks/rattle.
