Fog Light Issue When Switched to Auto

When the headlight switch is in auto mode (all the way to the left) and it's dark out (thus triggering hull headlights) I noticed that the headlights come on (good), but so does one of the fog lights (always one, not none or both). If I push the fog light button (still in auto mode) the other fog light comes on (both on), and when pressed again it goes back to one fog light illuminated. When switch is set manually to parking or Headlights on, this issue does not occur (fogs stay off). Wondering if this is a software issue. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't imagine it would be designed such that headlights + one fog light illuminated would ever be an option.

clemsonee Maybe its an 'intra-regional feature'. It does not happen in the UK. I always drive with my lights set to 'auto' and when it was foggy last week put both front and rear fogs on.
Maybe its a wiring fault with your car?

Is your steering wheel centered when this happens? The cornering light feature illuminates one of the fog lights in the direction you're turning at low speeds. The same also happens when you engage the turn signal.

Ah, yes, the fog lights are turning lights on US spec vehicles aren't they.

moving steering wheel to either direction will have one of the fogs go on. try it.

also when you shift reverse both fog lights go on (fog light switch off)

I can understand the turning lights but not both front fogs on then going in reverse, what's the point of that?

wdimagineer, you Sir, are correct, thanks! I straightened the wheel completely while stopped (with the car on) and both fogs were out. I find it a little weird, but glad I know now that it's "by design."

Yep, this is an old BMW feature that's been implemented for some time. We had this on our 2011 X3 as well when turning. Not sure how far back this feature dates.
