Best X5 BMW has made.
Very happy camper. 165 miles so far on our 14 X5 diesel. Smooth, quiet. Everything works. No squawks at all. 35.9 mpg on highway only so far. Comfort not Eco (yet). Wife loves BMW apps. She can voice text our kids. Much more refined compared to our 11 diesel X5. Glad I included the Harmon kardon as this X is quiet enough to enjoy the difference over stock sound. ACC works as advertised. Only complaint is glare reflecting off the dash instrument cluster when the sun is directly overhead. Hands down whips the ML and RR sport HSE we also looked at.

We often hear complaints as we expect as near perfection as is possible, especially for the cost involved. Of course absolute perfection is not always possible but it is refreshing to hear when things go right.
Congrats on your new X5! What options did you get? Pictures appreciated as well! |

Agreed. We just got ours as well, 350 miles on it. As we backed it out of the driveway and put it into D, I turned to my wife and asked her if the motor was actually on. It was whisper quiet, like the Tesla we almost bought. Of course, stepping on the gas produced a nice roar that the Tesla is missing!

that's why people complain about it often. they took something and made it worse. not acceptable.

Wow 35.9 mpg on highway? That's impressive.
My 35d only give me 26-27mpg at most on highway (about 75-78mph speed) and getting about 18-19mpg on city/local driving. Are we talking about the same gallon unit here? |

I just got 33.4 MPG over a 50 mile drive today @ 75 MPH. My commute goes from 5,100' to 6,200'. It was near 100 deg today. Tonight, when it's cooler and I'm going the other direction, I should crack 40 MPG, no sweat. I am running the Race Chip tuner @ the E/2 setting. So far, it has been well worth it. Before the tune I was getting 31 MPG and 34 MPG, respectively. All of this was in Eco Pro.

Maybe you are driving with a heavy foot. It's very easy to get 35.9 on the highway without driving on hills of course. Sometimes even more if you do Eco and keep at a low constant speed.

You would need to work it out brim to brim to find out what it's really doing, I wound suspect just a little less than it was getting before you fitted the tuning box. |

These 'tuning' boxes must fool the fuel manifold pressure control system into thinking there's less pressure in the manifold than there actually is, (they must apply a scaling factor to the measured value) the system compensates by raising the actual pressure further. I think these boxes might also do the same for the turbo boost pressure control system to artificially increase that parameter too. I'd love to see inside one of these tuning boxes, probably no more than a couple of cheap op-amp circuits with links to set the gains for each amp. (I bet they're very well encapsulated in epoxy or similar substance to hide their contents!) e.g. Tuning boxes will always result in improved indicated MPG's as they force the ECU into increasing fuel pressure, so when the ECU opens up each injector looking for say 50ml of diesel to be injected, 65ml is injected instead as a result of the higher manifold pressure. The cars computer still assumes the 50ml was injected, and it'll give you a consumption figure based on that value, not what it really has been injected. I'm sure they are effective though, in reality, they're probably very crude! All sounds very dodgy to me!

Congrats on your purchase! Other than some minor issues, I've been very happy with my 35d. She's got just under 6k on the odometer. Lifetime fuel economy for me is 8.8 L/100 (26.73 mpg), amazing considering this X5 replaced my very thirsty F150 Platinum with the 6.2L Raptor motor under the hood, which averaged under 13 mpg! Enjoy your new X5 man.

I do have a 1,000 mile trip to take next weekend. Going from 5,000'+ to 800' then back from 800' to 5,000'. It should be a really good test. More to come on that.

Honestly, no. I used to own an F550 and an F250, both diesels, and I found diesel pumps to be quite common. Once you were on the interstate, I'd have to say, every station had diesel available. Diesel is so common now I can actually pick and choose where I'd like to fill up. I personally prefer SHELL Diesel to the other brands. To add to that, there is an app you can download for your smartphone (GasBuddy, I believe) that will locate specific fuel types, octanes, brands, etc. Technology is a wonderful thing.

He said he only has 165 miles on the car so 35.9mpg is a skewed sample of what his actually mpg will be. It will drop to the spec'd figure that most vehicles will have. Of course driving habits vary and so will mpg. To put it in perspective, after you drive from 0 to 1 mile. You are getting over 100mpg. Assuming you use 1/100th of a gallon to trek that mile. 1mile / .01(gallons) = 100mpg |
