A big thank you to r33 for the parts and the initial instructions!

Opasha's update was also very helpful, especially for the locking lever on the large connector. I would not have spotted the lever without seeing the picture.

The screws in my car appeared to be T30's, the T25 bit was slipping when I started with that size. Overall it was a 20 minute job on my car and the new trim piece looks great.

Thanks for getting this started, I'm sure lots of us will appreciate the improved console space.

Glad we were able to help! The extra space is so worth it, right? Also, I don't even remember if I thanked Ben properly for his post, but thank you, my friend! It was a great help!

That's really strange about the T25/T30. When Ben mentioned it, he wasn't sure if it was T20 or T25. I bought both, and the T20 was way too tiny so I sent it back and got this T25: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-60-013...words=torx+t25. It worked perfectly.

Now I'm wondering if random little pieces are different in the i versions versus the d versions. Ben has the 3.5i and I have the 5.0i - both used T25. Can anyone else confirm this that has changed the cradle? Thanks

Opasha, you are very welcome.
It was the first thing that I noticed when I got the car. What a PITA to access stuff that I put in the compartment. BMW tries to upsell something that caused inconvenience to us. I know that in some models it didn't bother as much as the one in the F15.
As for the bit size, they could've changed it from some production period. Regardless, it is the same location and thread size. Maybe they try to saves a couple pennies just because the suppliers have an overstock on the T30's.

More usable space

r33 removed mine today. It took him literally 10 minutes! So happy with the extra space.

hey guys, any idea where I can get this part (BMW Part Number: 51169252106) in Canada/Vancouver? Ordering from the US doubles the cost due to shipping.

thanks in advance

You should be able to order it from parts/accessories department at your dealer.

I just did this project and it was still a bitch to remove some of the connectors even after reading all the suggestions. The black/pink connector did not want to come loose despite me pressing all pink "buttons". Also, lack of slack in wires makes doing this tough in a tight space. Glad it's over....

Yeah, the connectors are definitely the trickiest/most time consuming part. I had issues with the slack as well, which is why I disconnected all of the plugs from the white plastic portion to create more room to work with. Maybe I got it in reverse when I said this: Blue/Pink: this is tricky - pushing the pink button didn't work for me bc it was too tight so I used the pocket knife nail filer point to push the blue square inside that tiny hold you see in the picture and pulled both wires apart - it was tricky so be careful you don't hurt yourself." The black/pink one might have been the tricky one. Either way they both have that tiny notch hole for a pocket knife nail filer point or something small enough to fit in their to release the mechanism as you pull. Sorry it was difficult for you, bro. That's why I ended up writing up the extra details because I actually broke a sweat doing this portion and didn't want to break anything, lol.

However...in the end, it's worth it .

The tip about the hole on the blue/pink cord really helped...it used a tiny screwdriver to press in the hole as you had recommended and it came apart.

In general, I thought after reading the tips that it would have been easier, but it ended up being more difficult than I thought.

Doing it in 90+ degree Florida humidity didn't help either.

I ordered the non-smoker package tray insert as well from r33 and I like it too.

Glad it helped at least a little .

You're right, it definitely was more difficult than I had initially anticipated.

I did mine in an 88 degree garage in poor lighting, lol. I know how you feel, bro.

Yeah, I have that insert; it definitely is a nice space saver. The more space the better!

Yea, BMW seems to change the connector quality. Even after pressing the tab, it didn't unlock the pin from the hole. Some of the car I did also have issues with the connector.
Glad you finally did it.
